That poor people generally are not suited to become rich.
They don't know how to handle wealth and in that way loose their mind ( start spending too much too fast) -( loose the spoon).

The poor man was not very good at silverware management, and a whole lot of bees didn't make it back to the hive.

I've never heard that one before, but it seems to me to be saying that when something finally went right, something else went wrong. All of that honey and he had no way to get to it. Best guess.
