it really all depends on the skin type, what may ittitate one babies skin will sork fine for another.....the hospitals actually use the disposable diapers right after birth unless told otherwise.....So basically follow your heart/mind & watch ur babies bottom after changing, besides whether u use a cloth or dispsable diaper the baby can still get diaper rash.....Part of trial & error when ur a fresh parent {even an old vet makes mistakes}

Within minutes after birth both my children were in disposables! Cloth diapers take a LOT of work to keep clean, but cost less. And you will be busy enough with a newborn. Disposables are so much easier (use once, dispose) but can get expensive. Regardless of what type of diapers used, changing newborns is always timeconsuming. Change when feeding for sure or as needed if poop or pee is there obviously. To know for sure if the disposable is wet or not, take a few and put various amounts of water in them and feel them. They make some really absorbant ones nowadays so go by feel and weight, not just sight.
Most likely your grandmother is speaking from experience. When disposables first came out many, many many years ago, the chemicals and the way they were made sometimes were harsh on babies skin. But the manufacturing now have dramatically improved. So rashes are not really a problem caused by the diapers now.
Rashes are caused by irrantants, most often from the pee or poop in contact with the skin for too long a time, not the diaper itself. A barrier will help keep irritants away from sensitive skin, try vaseline, or penentin etc. And diapers should be checked at feedings, even during the night. A baby will not sleep through the night for several months so you won't have to worry about that.
The sheets might get wet when diapers (disposable or cloth) get wet enough, but a simple solution is to lay baby's bum on a towel while in crib, always have dry sleepers on hand and plenty of dry diapers. Have faith in yourself and good luck with the little one, Congratulations!

Stay away from disposables all together. Just stay with cloth diapers, they are much healthier for your baby.
Cloth diapers are cheaper in the long run than disposable diapers.
Cloth diapers breathe better than disposable diapers.
Cloth diapers are a lot softer than disposable diapers.
Cloth diapers don't get hot and sticky like disposables.
Cloth diapers cause less, if any, diaper rashes than disposables.
Cloth diapers are basically a one size fits all diaper, if you are using the standard rectangle or prefold diapers. Myself, I wear contoured cloth diapers that I made for myself with elastic in the waist and leg openings.
What else can I say about them. I'm incontinent and wear diapers 24 / 7 because of a medical condition. I've worn both disposables and cloth for extended periods of time to make up my mind which I would prefer.
True, disposables are more convenient for the most part but the are very uncomfortable compared to cloth diapers. For all the reasons I stated above, I prefer the cloth diapers and that is now what I wear all the time. I only use disposables on long trips where cloth would be way too much of an inconvenience.
Laundering cloth isn't as bad as so many people make it out to be. I do two loads a week for myself. I was them in regular detergent without any additives. I use vinegar in the first rinse and nothing in the second rinse.
Never use bleach on cloth diapers because it breaks down the fibers and the diapers wear out sooner than they should.
Never use fabric softener on diapers because it coats the fibers and makes them less absorbent which causes leaking at times.
If a diaper isn't thick enough, with cloth you double up, what do you do with disposbles? You can double up but then you have wasted the cost of two diapers and nothing on doubling the cloth ones.
Not much else to say other than cloth is my recommendation, unless you hadn't already guessed that.
Good luck.

You can use disposable diapers from birth. I have also heard people (happened to also be people of an older generation) say that the disposables cause rashes. I think they may have improved them since then.
Cloth diapers are a great way to go, economically and environmentally--and many people do believe that they are better for baby's health because of chemicals and such in the disposables. Yes, it is more of a hassle. They do make what's called all-in-one cloth diapers which, I think, are a little easier to deal with.
As far as having to change frequently one way or the other, you have to with either cloth or disposable. Newborns seem to pee a little bit constantly. I used to change my son about every three hours (even in the middle of the night).
It's really up to you. You can use disposables from the start if that's what you want to do. You can always switch if they do happen to cause any problems. Good luck.

Hi! Congrats on having a baby soon!
As for disposable diapers, I used from day one! I have yet to see any kind of rash on my little one, and she is almost 4 1/2 months old!!!! You could use cloth diapers if you would like. It's just your preference. If you choose to use cloth diapers, they do have little waterproof bottoms you can put over the diaper. They do take a little more time to prepare than would a disposable diaper. If you choose to go disposable, there are many brands out there. I choose to use the Pampers Swaddlers and sometimes I use the Huggies, but I prefer Pampers. I hope this helps!!!

Your grandmother might be a little old fashioned, but she is right.
Babies sensitive skin shouldn't come into contact with the chemicals and materials of a disposable diaper. They are bleeched, filled with toxic gels and very bad on the environment.
Why don't you ask for cloth diapers for the baby shower, they are very very cute and wont get the sheets dirty often (even disposible diapers leak sometimes!)
It isn't alot of extra hard work, and it is well worth it. Do some research now about cloth diapers and how wonderful they are for baby and the environment.

If you deliver in a hospital, usually, they'll put your newborn in disposable diapers.
Disposable diapers have come a LONG way from where they were while your grandmother was mothering-
They are much more absorbant- and more hyoallergenic- than they once were- so they are much safer to use on newborn skin.
If you worry about newborn rash- good 'ole vasceline on the hind end works well at preventing any rash.
Cloth diapers do work- but they of course aren't as absorbant- and you will have more leaks- but they are better on the environment.
Its really a personal decision- but disposable diapers- are absolutely fine on a newborns skin-

There's certainly a lot of opinions on cloth vs. disposable. I can share my experience.
I put all 3 of my children in disposables right from the beginning and never looked back. As far as sensitivity goes we didn't have any issues.
The first few weeks the baby poops around 8 times a day and wets a lot too. I can't imagine going through that many cloth diapers (although if there was some proven health benefit it would be worth it).
I have friends that used cloth diapers and they started with disposables and went to cloth after the baby got past the stage of "going" all of the time.

Once the baby born, the hospital will put disposable diapers on! So, it's okay to use it right after birth!
Each day, a baby needs to change diapers between 8 to 12 times (average). If you are gonna do cloth, there will be lots of washing everyday! It's your choice, lots of people will use cloth diapers.
Best wishes!

I love your grandma. Trust me, when I was a new mom, I wanted to do the whole cloth diaper thing. There are services out there that drop off the clean linens and take your dirty ones...like a stay at home mom can afford that! lol. So, I used the pampers swaddlers. They are the best in my opinion. Very cloth like. Some babies are just prone to rashes. My daughter had a couple of bad ones but they went away with Desitin...a diaper rash cream. The key is not to use powder. Powder used to be used with cloth diapers to keep away the moistness, but you don't need it with disposable diapers. When you give birth, talk to your care giver at the hospital. They are there to help you.
