I have been reading posts here and there just for fun, as I'm a little bored on a muggy Thursday night in Atlanta, GA. I happened to stumble upon some posts that I found quite interesting.

Someone had posed the question "Do British men like American girls?" I was surprised at the answers! So many people seemed to answer the poor girl with (uncalled for) animosity. Many stereotyped Americans to be loud, obnoxious, greedy, fat... all kinds of insulting stereotypes. I was actually a little offended and surprised.

Why are Americans stereotyped in this way? And even if we happen to speak in a louder tone etc., isn't this just a cultural difference? Something that is accepted here? Just because it is not common to speak at higher volume in other countries doesn't mean that it's "obnoxious", right? Just a cultural difference?

I think there are probably obnoxious people in all countries, outgoing or shy people in all countries, and people to admire or avoid in all countries!

I think it would depend on which "Americans" you are talking about since most appear to be so insecure that they prefix the word "American" with whichever country their ancestors originated from and depending on the answer they act as an exagerated version of that culture. so an Italian American would talk and act like one of the Sopranos or an Oirish American would come across as Seamus O'Malley from Donegal.

Maybe I'm the one exagerating but the one thing which I believe to be true is that Americans really are sensitive, and have to know why people don't love, respect or idolise them for all they have given the world.

In most of the posts I have encountered Americans come across so defensive about everything. Your question is a case in point, you are obviously from Georgia but instead of being Georgian you are American. Here in the UK we do not say we are from the UK we say we are from Scotland or Wales Or England or whatever, the only time UK is mentioned is when we are talking to foreigners so why do you feel the need to defend people from say, Tennessee or Wyoming or anywhere, Alaska even. You all seem to have this "We must all stick together" mentality and feel the need to defend people you have nothing in common with.

Personally, as a Scot, I would pull out my own tongue before I would feel upset over someone calling the English big mouths and I live here but I know that the English feel the same way. The only people who would disagree with that would be polititians and we all know what tossers they are, and that applies everywhere!

The point is why, why, why does it bother you? The more you whine, the more people do it and the more you whine - it is an endless loop. I think that most people would prefer to be liked than not, but it seems the Americans take it to heart. Everyone else just shrugs their shoulders and gets on with life. Anyway, best of luck, and lighten up - life really is too short.

Americans, for the most part, need to learn humility.

The trouble is this: most non-americans only see the brash, gaudy, self-deprecating bunch which appear in TV/Movies/Sport and so on, and there is little to commend this behaviour.

The majority of Americans, I suspect, are not quite in this mould, but they've left it a little late to change opinion without a great tide change happening.

We only have to watch golf, and we hear cries of "You're the man" or "In the hole" screamed at inappropriate moments in a cross-the-pond drawl with all the usual vowels elongated for maximum effect.

Damned Americans - this is the thought that crosses the mind!

The only ones who can fix this are Americans themselves, but do they have the will to do it?

>Which country in the world has the most obese people?

That would be China, with 190,000,000 obese people.

>Which country in the world has the most brash people?

I'm assuming your using the word to describe Rude and disrespectful people. I don't know about you, but American's are some of the nicest most generous people in the world, you may be basing your assumption on a very small number of people, but most people in America are sincere, and truly caring.

>Which country in the world has the worldly ignorant people?

Can you get more ignorant then stereotyping people?

I've always thought that anyone who stereotypes is too lazy or afraid to actually get to know a person. It's much easier for them to categorize than to understand. I agree with you on the people in other countries. So much depends upon the individual.

There is a big difference between Americans and the American govt. I really hate the hypocrisy of the American gov't (claiming to be the land of freedom and democracy but the CIA exporting suspects to be tortured overseas, keeping suspects in Cuba so as not to be bound by US laws etc to name but two, anyway...) But I find Americans to be warm and generous and likeable. Just a bit ignorant and naive and gullible about their gov't.

A lot of these people are just trying to get a response. I just take a tongue in cheek aproach. It seems to confuse them, which gives me quite a giggle.
