Actually, he is NOT the crown prince but the Prince of Wales. This is the title of the first born son of the reigning Monarch. Before becoming Prince of Wales there is a ceremony in Caernarvon in Wales when the eldest son of the Monarch is presented to the Welsh people. Then and only then, does he become the Prince of Wales. Prince Charles is also Earl of St Andrew (Scottish title). His son (the next in line to the English throne) is Prince William, after his father's Coronation, he will, when presented to the people of Wales become The Prince of Wales.

It is a very old title dating back to Edward the first that gave the Welsh people a Prince of their own.

Actually, it was a means of controlling them when they were unhappy being ruled by England.

English history is very complicated - most English people haven't really got a grip of it.

He has the title of crown prince because he is first in line to the throne, being the queens son. When the queen dies he becomes king unless he decides he doesn't want to, then it'll be William. He doesn't have to pass the crown though. We don't know if he'll decide to abdicate, only once it's made official will we know who's going to be king?

Charles will not become King until his mother, Queen Elizabeth II passes away or abdicates. Same thing goes for William. He will become the Prince of Wales when his father become the King.

Prince Charles is the Prince of Wales, the title of the heir to the UK throne. When his mother Queen Elizabeth passes, he will become king. And his elder son Prince William will become Prince of Wales, until his father passes, when he in turn will become king.

Queen Elizabeth II currently holds the crown and will be the reigning monarch until she decides to abdicate the throne to her oldest son Prince Charles. (She has another son, Prince Andrew). The Queen has been married since the late 1947 to Prince Phillip, but I believe due to him not being a British born citizen he was ineligible to be king.

Prince William (Prince Charles oldest son) is next in line for the throne after his father but I would assume it will decades before William is crowned king.

"Crown Prince" is a term meaning the heir apparent to the throne. As such, Charles will be Crown Prince until he ascends to the throne, dies, or renounces his place in the line of succession.

He's still Crown Prince cause his Mother's still alive, he'll (likely) be king when she stops this. Unless he just passes it onto William.
