This would be the most essential, minimum and really all you need list

Best car seat you can afford!! Very important!!!
Cot and 2 sets sheets.
Pram/Stroller
You only need a few nice clothes and then some onesies?/Jumpsuits
Baby bath or newborn bath seat for big bath
nappies and baby wipes.
A couple of bunny rugs/blankets
Dummy or bottles (about 4 ) should you chose to use them
Adaptable swing seat or bouncer/rocker

You don't really need to get a lot for a baby. Most people (yes I'm included) go WAY overboard. Don't bother with a bassinette or cradle, they are in them so little time its not worth the expense. You can buy baby sleep positioners for a big cot for newborns to stop them rolling over and smothering themselves. These are also adjustable for growing baby.
Baby monitors are overrated if babys room is close to yours I wouldn't bother but if you have a very large or two storey house the could be good investment.
Instinct tells you to wake up, trust me! You can't ignore a
crying baby!
Anything else for a baby is probably not actually going to help you be a better parent and things like mobiles, murals on walls etc.. are only for aesthetic reasons so its really up to you on what you spend.

The best thing you can get for your baby is a lot of love and cuddles. No money can buy this.
Good luck and congratulations! Don't let baby store staff talk you into useless expensive things either!!

I started buying when I was 6 months (24 weeks). The reason for waiting until then was the fact that a fetus is viable after 24 weeks. It just means that if something was to happen there would be a small chance of survival though I think its still less than 30%. I bought everything when it was on sale. I lay-byed most of the stuff. I'm pretty happy with the way I did it. I finished the final thing last Friday (1 week before my due date), and now I'm bored and sitting here twiddling my thumbs because I have nothing to do lol. I believe is up to you when you want to do it, whenever you feel comfortable, but having lost 3 babies in the past I know that things can go wrong, so I think that made me wait longer than most women do. The only thing that concerns me is that you aren't pacing yourself. You still have a LOOONG time until the baby will come and if you do it all now, you will be bored later because everything is already done.

Well you will need lots of diapers and wipes (Most babys grow out of newborn diapers before you even leave the ospital so get 1-2's) you will need burp cloths if you are bottle feeding try to get the bibs with the plastic underneath (almost every feeding the baby will dribble out the side of there mouth and these bibs save you from doing alot of laundry) alot of people will tell you to get DREFT its a baby detergent and you do not need to get that if you get All or some other hyperallergenic laundry soap that will be fine Dreft has causin washers to break believe it or not. You have to get the Aquarium swing it is a blessing (i dont know what i would do without mine) Also a great diaper Rash cream is called Buttpaste. Well I hope some of this helps you and congrats on the baby

Your baby needs the same things that you do -

A bed to sleep in, (whether crib, bassinet or playpen)
Clothes, socks and blankets
Diapers, good god, stock up on the diapers, start now, don't stop. Same goes for wipes.
A small medical kit, with things like, a thermometer, a medicine dropper, and a booger thingy (oh, come on, what are those things called, they are usually blue, with a suction bulb at one end?). Some ointment incase he/she gets a rash. That kind of thing. Easiest way to go shopping? Pretend that you have an indigent cousin, and go shopping for them, but think "baby?" What would they need? It worked for me.

Remember that essential for you, may not be the same for me.

Let's see-crib, carseat, tearfree baby shampoo and wash, a few baby washcloths and towels, and balmex (it's truly the best). Definitely get a swing-it will put the kid to sleep and preserve your sanity. And I highly recommend the Fisher Price Ocean Wonders Aquarium. My baby loved going to bed just to watch that thing and we could not take a trip without it. Oh and get a couple of Sleep Sacks. They are blankets that the baby wears and is unable to kick over it's head. Last I checked walmart online had them the cheapest-like $30 for 2.

Also, it is my opinion that changing tables are unnecessary. We just used a vinyl pad on the floor. The table is expensive and you have to fear leaving the kid there, just to pick up something across the room.

MY must haves are:
bottles
diapers

blankets
crib
bibs
teething rings
cloth diapers for spit rags
Binky's(suggest the exact one from hospital)
cloth IE. onies, pants, socks, Swaddlers for when they go to sleep it wraps em like a burrito
car seat
bouncer
play pen
boppy pillow
breast pump
stroller
jumper
baby bath
baby bath stuff IE baby shampoo baby body wash, baby powder baby oil.( I highly recommend Johnson and Johnson) wash cloths, baby towel.
A and D rash stuff
I have never washed there cloth with mine I use draft baby detergent.
I never used a changing table I have a plasticish changing pad I put a blanket on. I never used a bassinet either they are a waste of money in my opinion.
Also kids grow out of diapers so fast. so I would suggest getting one of the credit cards you put money on yourself so that way if the baby is to big for size 1 you won't have to waste like the 4 bags you still have. it will help you to be able to pick up the kind they will need with out wasting your money
So that's what I use on a daily basis. Best of luck and congrads.

To save money, visit your local thrift stores and garage sales for a crib, crib sheets (need several), baby clothes, baby swing (lovely thing to have), car seat (MUST have), blankets and such. Stock up on diapers, bottles and formula (unless mom plans to breastfeed).
You both should visit with "mom's" ob/gyn for more info.
Good luck!
