Here are a bunch of free videos that will tell you what you need to know http://www.expertvillage.com/interviews/sewing-basics.htm

You can do the easy stuff with very little effort (reattach a button or sew a ripped hem) within minutes of seeing how to do them. The really fancy stuff just takes practice.

Yes, in a way, it is. I am handicapped, I had a notion to sew, not easy stuff but, quilts. I started watching "Home and Garden" and the morning videos about quilts and sewing. It was fun to start and exciting, I thought, in two years, my wife and I, yes, my wife, I am a man, made fifty quilts.

Some special expertise is needed but, you can learn a lot by yourself.
You can purchase a machine at Wal-Mart that would work pretty nice and all the material you'll need. Watch for sales at "Joann's" and other material places. Good luck

There are short cuts to sewing that would be better learned through videos.

Sewing is like being an engineer, if you follow the plan you'll be successful. If you don't like to follow the rules, it's not good. Lol....go for it!

Yes, it turns out pretty messy at first, but the more you sew the better you get. :)
