On the Republican side - Mitt Romney. He used his moderate views to get elected in Massachussets and now has run to the right to separate himself from Giuliani.

On the Democratic side - no one has had to. This isn't to say it won't happen - I'm sure that Edwards or Obama, if nominated, would run to the center. But currently, being "Anti-Bush" is enough.

On either side, any candidate who examines the facts and logically changes his mind can be accused of flip-flopping.

Like George Bush Sr in the Reagan years, for example. He had been pro-choice in the 70's, and then took a strong pro-life stance after. He could be accused of flip-flopping, but he really made a consistent and permanent change in his views.

There's a difference between changing your mind, and just being non-committal and telling people what they want to hear.
Hillary Clinton changed her mind in Iraq (flipped, if you will), after voting for the war and supporting it up to a year ago. If things get better in Iraq and she changes her stance again, she's a flip-flopper pandering to public opinion.
I feel Clinton and Obama pander quite a bit to what people want to hear.

I haven't seen that any of the candidates on either side have given a lucid enough explanation of the issues yet to be labelled a flip-flopper.

John Kerry in the 2004 election was the textbook example, though.

Mitt Romney probably qualifies as the biggest flip-flopper. When he ran in Massachusetts, he positioned himself and governed as a social liberal. The day after he leaves office he becomes a social conservative (supposedly).

I am not seeing as big a flip flop on the Democratic side. Obviously, there are always minor adjustments in policies in response to changing situations (and a willingness to settle for half a loaf when no one is interested in the full loaf). And legislators always have to grit there teeth and accept one or two bad provisions in a bill to get the good provisions through (which is why legislators rarely get elected to higher offices).

Mitt Romney.
Hillary Clinton.

Are the two biggest flip-floppers. And, they are leading. It is a shame.

They all flip flop. They will say whatever they think it will take to get the votes.

Do you think that all of the Republicans who catered to the fundamentalist Christians were all deeply religious? No, they just said they were against abortion and got the votes.

Even Ronald Reagan flip flopped. When he ran for governor of California he was pro-abortion. When he ran for President, he was anti-abortion.

So you can either say they are flip floppers or they have become enlightened. I say they are all a bunch of phoney baloneys.

This doesn't exactly answer your question, but the opposite of "flip-flopper" is a candidate who rigidly refuses to change his/her mind. Let's see, that means John McCain, whose candidacy appears to be going down in flames over his refusal to part with his president's war policy.

Hillary Clinton is by far the biggest flip flopper right now. She changes her views DAILY based on who she is speaking to at the moment. I was going to list others but compared to her....no one else even comes close.
**** McCain's candidacy is "going down in flames" because of his ridiculous stance on illegal immigration NOT the Iraq war.

I haven't seen one candidate that I'd vote for. You have the Muslim (Aren't we at war with the Muslim fanatics)?, them we have Mrs. Clinton (Oh God Help Us) if she gets in. McCain is too mexican for me. he'd give the freaking country away. Thank God that Bloated Toad Kennedy isn't running! He for sure would not only give the country away but, we'd all be paying for it for generations to come.

I think all of them but one have flip flopped at one point or another. The one that has my attention is the one that has not flip flopped after 20 years serving in congress, his name is Ron Paul.
