My friend just recently had a baby who is in the NICU (newborn intensive care unit). She has been in there for two weeks, and will still be there for a few more. At the same time, my friend was hospitalized for toxemia and other complications. This is going to be a hefty hospital bill.

Is there a program to help pay for medical bills for these unexpected expenses?

yeah there is alot of options that is available... alway alway call the patient accounts department about the bills and tell them what is going on and why she can't afford to pay.. they will apply for free care for her if the medical bills is alot.. also they will try to work out some kind of payment such as 50 or 100 a months.. they can't really force you to pay if you dont have the moneys.. even if they bring her to court for the bills.. as soon as the judge see what situation she is in.. she will just arrange for a payment plan that will work out for her. there is alway a way.. just dont ignore the bills.. tell her to give them a call and see what is her options.. best of luck to your friend!

If she qualifies for the medical card or assistance through job and family services they can go back 3 months on bills for most bills including NICU. Your friend needs to contact the local job and family services to see if she qualifies. If not then she may need to fill out a paper from the hospital to ask for assistance from them. They may pay a percentage, or maybe even all of the bills if she qualifies for help.

i was in the same situation. i was in for 12 days when i had my daughter an she was in the NICU for 2 weeks. im pretty sure all hospitals take payment plans. and some will knock off money based on your income. i dont know of a program in my state... you'll have to look into it. ask a social worker at the hospital.
good luck

Depending where your friend lives and her income, she may want to apply for Medicaid or CHIP (children's health insurance program)or search online for government funded programs. There are programs that can help with medical bill assistance. Hope this helps.

If she hasn't already she should apply for medicaid.... even if she or her husband (if she's married) is over the limit financially she may be eligable for assistance thru them with a co-pay... tell her to apply at the Dept. of Human Resources asap... they will cover 3 months back usually.

i do no longer think of the daddy has to pay for something until after the infant is born and a paternity attempt is given. of course, i'd desire to be incorrect, yet i do no longer think of he has to assist with the expenses.
