You could try an ice pick as the hole maker.
You can buy a really crappy cheap hand drill and a set of flimsy bits for a few bucks. They won't last forever but will cover your needs. Look in a Dollar Store or similar junk place that sells tools.
There are also cheap wall anchors that have a self-drilling point. They are made of hard plastic and need to be started with a hammer and then twisted with a screwdriver to get them caught tightly in the wall.

Well, you can hammer a nail into the wall to make a hole, or you can buy "e-z anchors"...They are plastic anchors but they are threaded so that they screw in easier. Then you should be able to tap in a small nail to get it started and then just twist.
(However there are craft drills that are manual/crank drills that are cheap if you can find one)

You can buy anchors for sheet rock that simply screw in, not necessary to drill a hole first. One brand you can buy at places like Home Depot is "EZ Anchor", and is screwed directly into sheet rock using a phillips screwdriver.

Usually a Philips screw driver is the same size as the anchors and will "drill" a hole in dry wall by twisting it back and forth. Hold the anchor and screw driver together to see if they are the same diameter.

You can try a punch or a large nail and keep on inserting it into the wall until you reach the size you need to get the anchors in.

If you want to hang pictures or something not too heavy, buy the stick on hangers, but don't stick them, put several staples in the sticky part, Works great and doesn't mess up the wall...........Nuf Said
