Recently, I heard that a few NFL teams are reducing the number of two a days. Now there is a debate in a few states to reduce the number of 2 a days at the high school level because of they say that it is harmful for kids. I disagree with this because I feel, as a former high school football player, that 2 a days is most needed at the high school level since kids are still trying to learn the fundamentals of the game. Of course it should be controlled and the kids should be provided plenty of fluids, but I don't think states should ban it. The results will be sloppier high school football games and possibly fewer recruits into the college level because the kids may miss out on the opportunity to get in extra practices.

Do you think 2 a days should be banned at the high school level?

2 a days are very important in high school in my opinion. For one the need to learn all the plays and fundamentals. It also brings the team closer. Coaches just need to make sure everyone stays hydrated.

I don't think 2 a days are necessary anymore at the high school level, at least where I'm at.

I think the kids come to practice in better shape then when I played. When I played, when the season was over, you were pretty much done until next season. Now a lot kids stay in shape and have off season work out programs, much like the pros. They don't need as much conditioning.

Another thing a lot of high schools in my area do is run summer camps for a week in early July, so they get to work on things there.

NO! 2-a-days are a necessity for high school programs due to the need for the athletes to focus on fundamentals at this level and what better way then continuous practice. Plus student athletes shouldn't focus a 100% of their time on training during the off season, they're first and foremost students! 2-a-days are a great way to shake off the "cobwebs". Also lets be honest sometimes students don't show up to camp in the best shape and 2-a-days helps correct that.

It is the responsibility of the coaching staff to protect their players by not over training them and looking for signs of injuries and fatigue/dehydration, specially during 2-a-days.

As for the NFL, they're pros and if they want to keep their job they should be training constantly in the off season looking for whatever way gets them an legal edge in the league. NFL coaches sometime use 2-a-days for team building/bonding, but not for conditioning...at least they shouldn't. Also NFL players are million dollar investments and it's a big risk to get them hurt by pushing too hard in a non-game situation and without the benefits of youth, their bodies don't always bounce back from 3 weeks of 2-a-days.

Irresponsible coaches make two a days look like hell. They forget the point of two a days. In the pros, its much easier to argue because they are professionals. The veterans know the playbook, the rookies study it on their own, and they all have personal trainers for conditioning and weights. All they need is to blend it together and do it as a unit. In high school, players need much more work, and a good coaching staff will monitor the players, keep fluids up and take breaks on hot days. But, discipline, fluidity of plays, and conditioning is necessary at the high school level.

2 a days at the high school level are predominately for getting people in shape. Most all the pros have off season conditioning programs and they stay in decent shape year round (there are exceptions though). For me 2 a days in high school and college (usually the first full week of practice) were conditioning with lots of technique drills and a little bit of learning the offense.

I'm not a fan of 2-a-days because you'll just tire out the players a lot faster, especially on the high school level and especially when it's hot outside. I applaud the NFL for taking that first step.
