It is not the kind of experiences that define you as a person. They merely tell you how you have conducted yourself in a given situation. This can spell your personality trait. Defining you as a person is evocative experience. Your thought process tell you what kind of person you are.

Well, I have been volunteering at my local hospital's emergency room. As a part of my job, I am supposed to direct people to fill out basic triage forms before they can be seen by a nurse. Last week, a disgruntled elderly man came into the ER and became snappy with me without any provocation on my part. However, I recognized that his frustration didn't lay with me, but rather his frustration with being ill at an inconvenient time. I tried to offer some reassuring advice and let the man go along his way. From this single incident alone, I realized that the only way to change uncomfortable situations is to remain positive and be as diplomatic as possible.

You would need to write many books to answer that for mostly any human! Being born, getting sick, making friends, being loved, being rejected, feeling hate or fear are all some of the things that significantly define people...! If you can find ONE single experience in your life that is the sole significant experience which defined you... you have issues of misunderstanding the vast gamete of existence and who you are!
Now, you probably mean a significantly traumatic(positive or negative) event that defined some aspect in your life. One event you, or I in this matter, find/believe to be very important to whom I am now!?
I would need to say was becoming a father and all that came of it!

Violence, violence, violence and violence.

Then came the violence that I witnessed that happened to others.

Violence can destroy a person. It can also be a changing experience in one's life. The specific details are irrelevant.
