I think all the religions are basically the same. All believe in a higher power. Most of these "higher powers" promote a good way of life. Notice I said most and not all.

The other half of the most. . .pre-moat what we consider to be "evil". it only evil to us, and becomes evil to them because we force our religion on them.

This i believe has been true from the crusades right to modern day.

For the species to evolve we need to put aside our religious beliefs and indeference and work as a society to evolve. I say this because of our beliefs, Its all about beliefs.

All religions have a tendency to bash each other, particularly those that have evolved in Western and Middle-Eastern societies.

In having a similar discussion years ago, which led all four participants to actually define "religion," one of gentlemen involved offered this answer:

Religion is the devil's attempt to keep the human race from uniting to defeat him.

I don't know how much I believe in the Judeo-Christian archetypes of the devil and god, but it sure does seem that a lot of people have been killed over thousands of years in the name of religious fervor - people killing people to promote the ways of their god doesn't seem to match the writings of any holy text I've seen, from Rg Veda to Koran to Torah to Bible.

Belief isn't based in good and evil, the notion of good and evil is a result of our need to believe in an afterlife. We are mortal and what happens after we die is a mystery, and we fear the unknown. Belief in an afterlife is the one single thing that all religions share. Fear of what may come has driven our concept of good and evil, reward and punishment. Although we can see good and bad in the world around us too, pure good and evil has religious undertones. Evil is the polar opposite of what will get you whatever afterlife you're after.

Belief does not hold us back. Religion is not the problem, but it is frequently the excuse we've used to do what we want to do anyway, but it's not the main reason. Every religious war has had other motivating factors too...mainly real estate. Even the Crusades. Jerusalem was just another piece of real estate that Rome wanted.

In order to have an 'evolved' society we need to overcome our base instincts to compete amongst eachother just like any other pack of animals, and that's not going to happen! Of course we can give it our best effort and try to be civilized, but humans will never ever stop fighting.

I love the way way you asked that question JT. I consider my self a Christian. I believe in a higher power and the choice to do good or evil (free will). But I don't believe in bashing other religions. I think everyone has a right to their own beliefs. Why can't people just see that and be courteous to another persons beliefs or way of life, for that matter. I think then, and only then, can we could evolve as a society and still have our religion.

Beliefs are mostly good things... organized politicized groups of people that claim or think they believe the same things is just a serious mistake and misunderstanding of the idea of belief and its functions. Unlike a political party that can mostly work functionally based on compromise, an organized religion has to supply for what should be accessed absolute truth. Having absolute truth requires that all others are wrong! Those who take the time to make sure they unite under one absolute truth banner are not likely to function in compromise.
Until we stop being stubborn pundits of absolute truth there will be problems with it! Just look at abortion rights, stem cell research, gay marriage, etc!!!
However I must point out that religions are not basically the same... Culture is a severe spliter in them even within the same major strands such as christianity... Now, some of their claimed goals might be similar to an extent!

Some religions like Christianity have brought society so far and yet you think we should trash it for what??? Thou shall not kill should be replaced? Why?
Do not steal... would you say... borrow it when they are not looking?
What part of religion (I am a Christain so I guess I am most interested in what part of my religion) you would "put aside"
Why is it religions fault when people go crazy and do wrong? Would you go around killings dogs if a madman said a dog told him to kill people? The madmen you see killing in the name of religion would kill in some other name if they did not know about religion. I blame evil for what it is. Why must people believe the devil when he packs the blame off on God?? Grow up! That is the oldest trick in the book. I wish I had a nickle for everytime my brother blamed me for things he really did. Oh yeah... that would be something else... would you do away with "thou shall not bear false witness"?
Look at life and religion with honest mind... Look at the one true God with an honest heart.

According to Evolutionists they tell us our planet is 5 billion years old. That is equal to 5,000 million years. There are large numbers of different species, yet evolutionists admit it would take a million years to produce just one of them! So, according to the evolutionists, there has not been enough time to produce the vast numbers of species we now have on earth.
Evolutionary theory is a myth.
God/Goddess/higher power/ Buddha?etc..... (whatever you believe in)
created everything; the evidence clearly points to it. Nothing else can explain the mountain of evidence.
This is science vs. evolution
So for the species to evolve what is needed is TIME & LIFE
We have already evolved and came along way....With more time we will proceed.

it is actually truethat judaism, christianity and hinduism all beleive in the same god. obviously you can see it in judaism, same religion just jewish dont beleive in jeesus. hinduism's messiah or the man that started the religions name was mohammad. and he was told that he must start a new religion by the angel gabriel, the same angel that told the virgin mary that she would have the son of god.

the only things that make us different, is that we still have different beleifs, different rules and different customs. the bottom line is that each religion has different values. but they all beleive in the same god. now, theres one god, three religions and three sets of completely different values. which shows that its impossible that none of the religions could have all the "right answers" but its a fact that all of the religions have some of the "right answers" and some of the "wrong answers". and it is obvious that alot of rules in religions were actually "made up" by cirtain authority figures in the religions (example, pope stating that all people that fight in crusades will automatically go to heaven, and during the middle ages the catholic church created 'tickets' to heaven) these among many other "ideas" were created by rndom figures in the religions history. thus showing that that the only figure in any religion that you can completely "trust" are the words spoken by god himself, jesus's.

when it comes down to it, how do we know that the other parts of relgions not directly stated by jesus can be the "truth" how do we know that we can trust them?

thus proving that more than we need to all have the same beleifs, but if we created a new religion only beleiving in things directly stated by jesus, andnot by conclusions or ideas of other peoples being put into his mouth. which would solve alot of problem in our world,

I dont agree with that at all.....Religous differences in society is what makes us uniqe. For most people its part of there culture and not ment t be compared to other religouns...thats insulting in most countries. Its not true from the crusades, I mean people were killed for thier religous beliefs. Its not tryin to evolve because thats not something you try to do its something that just happens.

You are about believing. Are you about knowing. The prerequisite for all criticism is the criticism for religion. Karl Marx.
'For Germany, the criticism of religion has been essentially completed, and the criticism of religion is the prerequisite of all criticism. '
