I have nothing against the man personally, but his cogito is the source of many of the west's erroneous distinctions, such as mind/body, objective/subjective, etc...
He is singlehandedly responsible for creating a thought movement that would ultimately alienate western man from his universe because of this.
But him as a person? He probably couldn't fathom what he was unleashing and probably believed he was doing what was right. Hell is paved with good intentions, after all.

He was a very very good mathematician. His philosophy is wrong. He holds that ideas rather than things are the proper object of the intellect, and incorrectly asserts that the modes of being depend on the modes of understanding. He asserts that everything is merely extension/quantity because he thinks that extension is an a priori concept. His physics is a good example of the fallacious application of this principle.
His co-ordinate system is darn useful though. And he was a very very smart man.

Despise the man. He developed dualism. Everything is interconnected. He fostered irresponsibility. Global warming, and stupidity are the fruits of his thought. Nothing is an island much though Descartes may wish it so. Oh the poor misguided man.

Although I'm sure none of us here ever met the man for some odd reason or another, I feel some of his work is of great importance to humanity! Saved us some serious headaches and gave us new ones!!!
