Your hard drive has probably failed. Hopefully you are still under warranty.

Try to F2 and go into BIOS and see if your hard drive is listed.
You can also try booting from a CD or another device to see if your hard drive registers, but it is sounding like you're hard drive is not working. or is not connected properly from what you tell me.

On a Dell Latitude D600 the hard drive is located behind the jacks for the microphone and headphones on the left side of the laptop. There is a small screw on the underside of the laptop right near the 2 jacks that if you take out will allow you to slide the hard drive out like a drawer. It is possible that something just came loose, so if you are comfortable doing so, I would try sliding it out and pushing it back in first. There is also a hard drive adapter that is necessary with the D600. It won't work if you just put in a standard 2.5 inch drive without the adapter, so double check that the adapter is attached to the pins of the drive and that it is seated correctly.

Your best bet here is to call Dell, and they will help you reconfigure the problem yourself.

Somewhere in the course of your laptop's life, the BIOS got corrupted into not recognizing the hard drive. Either that, or the cable from the hard drive to the motherboard was disconnected. There is also the chance that your hard drive simply died.

Hope this helped!

you have to go to the BIOS first, check the default bootup... if is the hard drive, then its already dead, needs replacement, maybe it is still under warranty..
