a tan is nice but i prefer being white as id rather not die of skin cancer.
A tan can make you seem slimmer and looks nice in summer.

But thats about it.

Go fake but dont do it yourself. Otherwie you might end up looking like an orange

The point is really to look like you are rich enough for a tan. A long time ago, a tan was considered unattractive, because it meant you did hard labor outside instead of relaxing indoors with royalty. Now, a tan means that you can afford to spend time at the beach (or at a tanning salon, or at a Mystic Tan booth). That is essentially why tanning is so popular now, mainly among white Americans (most Asians I know try not to tan).

I personally have very light skin, because of my heritage across the north of Europe. I'd rather have white skin than skin cancer.

By the way people, a base tan does not protect against skin cancer. Tanning damages the skin, no matter what. And even fake tans haven't been around that long, what are the long term consequences of repeated Mystic Tans?

To answer this question, a TAN is actually a sign of skin damage. A tan is formed to protect the body from absorbing an excess of solar radiation, which can be harmful. A little of daily sun is necessary for the body, but not in excess as Western culture has been known to do. I find it kind of ironic that here in America, we are sunworshippers and want to be darker and bronze; In Asia and other places, products are sold to bleach and whiten the skin. Industry telling us we need to buy product to be different and accepted. I find it sad and pointless to jeopardize health and waste money just for fashion and acceptance.

Anyone who says if you get a tan you'll get cancer and die. I say that's a load of bull.
When I was little I used to practically live at the swim pool, without sunblock. I laid out on the lawnchairs every once in a while, without sunblock.
Do you see me having cancer? No. My skin's perfectly fine and still soft as a baby's butt.
No, I didn't do it for a tan or to look "prettier". I did it because I had fun. And this goes for all of the rest of my family and my whole community. Screw cancer.

I don't! I have beautiful fair skin and I wouldn't damage it for anything in the world! I think Hollywood is mostly responsible for the tan craze!
