Clarification: I'm from the USA with no background in law or law enforcement.
It's telling to me that most respondents give the feel that this is more of a crime because the victim is 80. To me everyone has value and that starts out more or less equal. When you start extorting money and beating people your value drops, quickly. If this guy should be hanged for assaulting and 80 year old, then he should be hanged for assaulting a 20 year old. Citizens who abide by their nations laws should get equal protection. That said, maybe we need stiffer punishments. I liked the suggestion that he has to work and contribute his money to the victim to replace the shake down money, how about we include the medical bills as well.

I just don't understand the kind of thinking it takes to do that kind of thing. I don't know what the law is in BC, but I hope they give him the max of whatever it is. That poor man he tries to be a good man and he gets beaten for it. I guess what they say is true, sometimes. No good deed goes unpunished.
There is nothing anyone can do to repay someone after giving money and then being beaten. No matter the punishment it still happened and that cannot be rectified. That is the sad thing about it.

^You didn't say if the police caught him, he should get at least 10 years for every day that poor man paid him, with no chance for parole.
I hope the gentleman is alright.
I would be disheartened, but he will probably get very little to no time and community service. Our laws need to be changed.

Put him in prison and let it be known what he did, it want be long before he will be punished and we don't dirty our hands. We had an attempted rape inside a church in the states, the woman stabbed him with a ink pen. I once designed a prison but was told it was to inhumane, no human contact.

Monkey see, monkey do? Bad monkey. Do you ever want him loose on the streets again? Safer for everyone and cheaper to hang this one. He has no soul or conscience. Serious defect.
