Ok, that's a good question...
and it's NOT to be taken literally that the moon is the "color" blue..
The term "blue moon" usually refers to a "full moon" that appears four times in the same quarter.
Typically in any one quarter (3 month period) there are only THREE full moons...
a "blue moon" then will appear TWICE in one of those months.
...the term "blue" simply means the second full moon in the same month is "rare".
You may have heard the expression, "Once in a blue moon".
meaning something that does not occur too frequently.
btw (in case you were wondering)...
the term "Harvest moon" means that full moon that appears nearest to the Autumnal equinox...which is typically September 23....the beginning of the harvest season (in most cooler climate areas of the U.S.).

It has something to do with our atmosphere, I have seen the moon white, gray, blue, and red.
Gray is usually a coming storm, probably seen through gray clouds really.
White is usual.
Blue is rare to see but the mood does shine blue once in a while. That is where the expresion "Once in a blue moon" comes from, also the song "Blue Moon"
Red seems more common although red is rare as well.

A "blue moon" is the second full moon of any given month. It only happens that there are two full moons in the same month once in a great while, but when it happens, it's called a blue moon. Don't know why they picked blue. peace

I think because some people think blue is a night color and since the moon pops out at night, that's why people color it blue.

I always thought that blue moon applied when the moon was alone in the sky without any stars or anything to accompany it. It sounds childish I know but that's what I got from the song it was "blue" because it was alone.

sometimes it looks blue because of how the light is reflected. the color you see is also affected by light traveling through the atmopshere.
the term "blue moon" also refers to the second full moon in one month (usually there's only one a month)
