Stupid Christian is I.
The bible frustrates me, but I'll try.

It is NOT associated with the Devil. Instead it is associated with the Beast (who is not the same thing as the Devil). It even spells it out VERY clearly in your Bible.
So, why cant you Christians read your own Bible?

In the Book of Revelation, Chapter 12, it gives an introduction of The beast of blasphemy (The devil). This beast was supposed to fight The Lord in the end of days, try to win, and rule forever. Chapter 13 goes into more detail about the beast.
Verse 16 says "He that causes all, (turmoil, pain suffering, death etc), both small and great. rich or poor, free and bond, to receive the mark in their right hand or in their foreheads."
Verse 18 says, "Let him that has understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six."
I won't even make a purchase with those 3 numbers. I will get something else or put something back. I know I am a weirdo!

I saw a special on PBS, Nova or somewhere, that had actual video of graffiti inside pyramids and at Pompeii where people from those times had written about women using numbers. It used to be fairly common for people to use the alphabet/number system to refer to someone or some place--I would guess very common, judging from the fact that work crews and teenagers used to graffiti using the technique!
The page linked below has a bold heading that says "His number is 666". That section describes what I'm talking about.
Although it's just one of many theories, it makes the most sense to me. It has historical precedence, and I've seen video of examples from two different places in two different times. Also, I'm teaching myself Hebrew (trying, is more like it!), and Aleph represents 1, Beta represents 2 , etc....
I think there's a name for this, but I don't recall.

Ask Yahoo! answered this question back in 2002. As other responders have noted, the number's association with the devil are rooted in the bible.
According to the book of Revelations, followers of the beast (aka the devil) "will have the mark or the name or number of the beast on their right hands or foreheads."
Verse 18 states: "Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six."
But why the number "666"? There are many theories. As Ask Yahoo! notes, one of the more common has to do with the fact that, in the bible, God created man on the sixth day. In Mathew 16:23, "Satan is described as being "man-centered" (as opposed to God-centered). Thus the devil's number would be a twist on man's number."
Again, that's just one theory. There are many others.

6 refers to the number of man. For example God created man on the 6th day. Three 6's represent the # of the anti-christ and his trinity, thus, Satin, the anti-christ and the false prophet.
For every thing God has the Devil has tried to replicate as in His holy trinity, thus, The father, the son and the holy spirit or ghost as some may refer.
