You reference Crisis on Infinite Earths and yes they did it to get rid of years of ridiculous stories and history. But here's the deal a 100 people may think an idea is stupid and 1 may like the idea, sometimes that 1 person is a DC writer. Just look at the current stories, Superboys back, Supergirls back, Kryptos back, and now they've opened up the phantom zone and brought about 100 Supermen to earth. Now they're bringing back the multiverse , I stopped buying a lot of marvel comics after thee clone saga, and Jean Grey coming back for the 5th time, and DC's headed in the same direction. Try some Image comics or other independents. Black Summer, The Walking Dead, Chronicles of Wormwood, Invincible & Noble Causes. Powers is still pretty good.

IN Crisis on Infinite Earths many characters did die. Some of these have come back as the same character because of a writer or an editor ie supergirl and krypto. However some of the characters that have comeback are not the same they are a diffe\rant person with a differant origin not at all related to the first ie Huntress. The resons for this can be the fans or a liking by a creator at DC.

The current Supergirl is not the same person who died in the Crisis of Infinite Earths.

The people you see in the hero's costume are not always the same person, but someone else picking up the mantel.

There have been 4 different people that have worn the Robin costume, numerous Super Girl's, Green Lantern's, and Flashes, 3 Huntresses, 2 Black Canery's, etc.

Even Batman has been portrayed by someone other then Bruce Wayne when he has been away. Azreal, Nightwing, and Huntress have all been Batman.

Also remember the comic book rule, if no one ever finds the body, they probably aren't dead.

They for the most part are restarts.

Step away from the continuity - DC is a business. They cannot allow their creations to go unused. They must try and keep them fresh. So every once in a while, they kill some, bring them back, allow a creator to completely change the history... No one really pays too much attention to all of this.
