I have a 1958 Chevy Apache with a 283 engine, and I want to tune it up with some good quality plugs and wires. I don't know which is the best brand to use. And what else should i do to tune it up?

A/C Delco, I wouldn't use anything else for that vehicle. Also change the points, condensor, cap, rotor, fuel filter & air filter.
If you have the money and it's not already done you should try to convert it over to electrontic igntion unless of course you want to stay stock for car shows.

The thing to remember when buying parts for your vehicle, whether it's spark plug wires or a battery, or even oil, you get what you pay for. You're already doing what you're supposed to be doing: which is research, but you need to take it further by checking out different brands and then asking people if they tried them. That's what I did, and I ended up with Autolite ProfFit because they're a good set, they're premium materials, and they're matched to fit my vehicle. I thought about Accel, but was told by several pple, including the autostore, they're a pain to install and I get same performance with Autolite ProFit and Professional Series. That being said, Bosch and Taylor are great brands and other parts, I like using Borg Warner (BWD for short.) So do some good research, ask people questions that have used a brand you're considering, and remember, sometimes a few more dollars up front will save you a bunch in the long run. Especially if you get a misfire later and want to eliminate poor quality wires or a crossfire as a reason, which is what happened to a buddy - turns out he hadn't changed his plugs at the time. And for plugs, I wanted plugs that were factory gapped, which made installation easier and let me start with premium plugs so I get better performance and a more reliable spark. And some websites like Autolite for example, have how to videos also.

I believe your 283 had either AC-Delco 45's or 44's. I'd install a distributor cap with brass terminal inserts. Standard, MSD and others have caps and rotors that are not black. That's the way to fly because the old ones had trace elements of carbon in them which eventually lead to cross fire. The rotor should be red or blue (same brands) for the same reason with a brass blade. Moroso has great blue silicone jacket and termanal end ignition wires that fit the window type distributor caps. They are are low resistance and won't destroy your radio's reception.

You would need a set of points. Try and get the cross-cut points, I've always had better luck with them, they run cooler and will last longer. You may want to replace the distributor button and the cap. Points were gapped at .016" or about 35 on a dwell meter. I think you have the GM peek-a-boo distributor. You can get a set of OEM wires and the Champion plugs.

The best plugs and wires to use on that engine are AC Delco. Your gonna need fuel and air filters, a PCV valve, cap and rotor, and a set of points. You may want to change the oil if you haven't done it recently

Ask an old mechanic. I would go to NAPA and ask their recommendation on temperature range of plugs.
For starters, I would change plugs, wires, rotor, distributor cap, points and condenser. Also look at belts and all hoses. Vacuum lines are rubber so that is a cheap insurance policy.
Check your waterpump for moisture in the weep hole or bearing failure. See if it has a lot of side to side play.
Good luck and enjoy your truck.
