The emergency brake light in the console is always on in my sisters 2000 Mazda Protege. I checked the brake fluid and it is about half full. Also when I'm driving it, the brakes squeek sometimes. Could a brake fluid change solve this or are the brakes totally shot and need replacing?

No there is no smell, I would definatley notice if it was still engaged, it's a standard transmission also.

There is either a problem with the brakes or the E-brake switch is not making when the E-brakes are released. It could be a low fluid warning, if it is so equipped.

At any rate, brakes are something you dont' want to play with, have it checked out at a shop.

most e-brakes are mechanical (usually cable) not hydraulic. is there a burning brake smell ? that means the e-brake is still engaged caused by a jammed cable, linkage or brake lever/pedal. if there is no smell, could be the e-brake on switch is jammed or broken.
first scenario, bad trouble
second scenario, not bad
