1) pine needles are burned so the smokecan be used to cleanse the shamans body. example-- hands, arms, face.
the smoke is also used to purify.
2) whitepine tea made from boiling the needles, has more vitamin c then orande juice. it is used to treat scuvy and colds.

Depends on the tradition that shaman is coming from.
Anything aromatic, like pine, resin, cedar and sage is good for keeping the other tools in the medicine bag clear. It can also be burned as a cleansing incense.
