And what could be done to make hockey grow in popularity. I would like to see hockey do more to go out and draw more people to the game.

As a competitive spectator sport, yes. Financially, who knows? The owners just renewed Gary Bettman's contract for the next few years because he got them a salary cap. But with teams still losing money, and the new revenue sharing process milking richer teams to compensate nonhockey markets, that could change. Recently, Bettman, under pressure from the Leafs, forced the Nashville Predators to sell to a Nashville business group for significantly less (check google news for exact figures) than an Ontario billionaire, Jim Balsille, was prepared to offer; as a result, this will cost the other owners in the NHL millions of dollars as they continue to prop up a franchise that can't sell tickets. Short term gain for long term debacle. Eventually these blunders will bite Bettman in the ***, but as long as the major US teams continue to make money, Bettman will be around, destroying the NHL for the rest of us who actually care about the sport. Apparently this guy came from the NBA...go figure.

You might not realize that Gary Bettman was hired by the 30 owners of the NHL. What gets changed or determined is done through a process. He does not act alone.

I will agree that the NHL isn't what I'd like it to be. But one thing we hockey fans have in common is that our opinions mean nothing to the NHL as long as we are buying tickets and merchandise.

- the recession has/will influence all activities - you ought to normalize the fee ticket fee no longer basically fee according to game, yet additionally evaluate the # of video games in the season, and the # of seats which are available in in the "section(s)". - "no way nhl ought to be 'in the back of' NBA"? --> while has that ever no longer been the case? - Columbus, Atlanta? why? motives? are you basically going w/ (possible) maximum modern? what approximately Phoenix - skills pool unfold too skinny? what approximately each and every of the semi-professional and amateurs attempting to interrupt into the sport. - bettman isn't attempting to interrupt the industry into Japan (Asia). average difference. i wasn't going to actual answer the question, because of the fact i think of the above issues did no longer seem considered, yet i visit grant this (the final analysis): "Is Bettman a superb commissioner?": answer: curiously his boss(es) think of so. the vendors keep him in. it particularly is all that concerns. this question comes up a minimum of approximately as quickly as a week. Bettman does not artwork for the followers. he works for the NHL front workplace, and the vendors. and the NHL front workplace works for the vendors. to regulate and administrate the league. sigh, there is going LITY returned w/ those stressful little info. LITY, gosh, you're making it particularly tricky to return up w/ conspiracy theories, once you initiate up spouting off each and every of the researched archives. How inconvenient!

That's like asking if rinks need to be kept cool.
OF COURSE the NHL would be better off without him.
Hockey as a whole needs to do a better job at promoting their big guns. They stepped up a little bit last season doing promos and commercials for their big stars but it was on a channel that people A: didn't have or B: didn't know they had.
The NHL needs to get rid of Bettman, come to ESPN and promote the big names (Crosby, Ovechkin, Thorton, etc.), and get the sport back out there.

Yes.

And I thought the commercials they made last year were great. Marketing the faces of players will help. It's only been two years since the lockout, so I think the league's doing alright so far, except for one area that REALLY sticks out: the NHL needs a better television deal in the U.S.

I got two words for ya......Hell YA!!!!!!

Put hockey in hockey markets and places where people care about hockey and then it will be successful. It will never be a better league than NFL, MLB, or NBA. But it is good and if we FIRE Gary then we can all move forward!

Beating a dead horse.

As for popularity, contribute to global climate change so the lakes down south freeze and they get people playing hockey from the grass roots.

Depends on who replaces him, believe it or not I think there ARE worse people out there. Including ones that are currently IN the game. Like Brett Hull, who is a Broadcaster and some people use to seem to want to vote him as the new Commish.
