I don't feel that we should ever forget the past. However, I know that we should not hold hostility because of past historical events. We should learn from our mistakes and embrace the lessons that we learn. To forget the past, means forgetting our Ancestors. If we should actually forget the past, why do we take history classes in school? On the other hand, how can we know where we are going, if we don't know where we have been or how far we have come?

Because some people want to erase what has come before, especially if it is bad. The problem with this idea is that history often repeats itself and those who do not learn from the past are doomed to repeat it's mistakes.

We should not 'forget the past' because the past teaches us to be a better person. We learn history so that we don't repeat it again in the future. Also, forgetting about the past is like forgetting our ancestors, our race, and things that made us who we are today. We all can certainly learn from the past so we don't make the same mistakes again. However, you need to LET GO, not FORGET, about the past to be able to move on and be the person you are today.

Hope that helps!

You are right. The thing is history teaches us why thing are the way they are. I mean if one does not grasp what happened then they have no clue as to why things are happening. That is just the simple truth. I feel it would be a shame to forget history. Think of all the amazing people and events that took place. I mean if one wants to look for real heroes and not just some over paid guy that knows how to play with his balls(lol) (sorry I could not resist) one can find hundreds of them in history. I mean from Hadrian to Andrew Jackson to Franklin D. Roosevelt to Ronald Reagan. These are only a small small number of the ones. History should give us pride in our heritage, and individuality and to us as a nation or a group of people. History also looks at thing like economics and business so we may learn from the mistakes that may have been made, so we can avoid from doing them again. History is so much more than a date and one or two people that one may learn about in high school. It is a recorded record about who we were and how we got to where we are today. I think any history teacher who just makes his pupils learn dates and events is doing a great disservice to the minds he has to teach. Not to mention it is rather boring, and I have a degree in history and I am saying that. One should get a feel for the time and the people, their music, dress, social customs, what they considered deviant behavior and what influenced that group. History can be a very fun and enjoyable experience. I think the ones who do not like history are the ones who have had the sad and bad luck to have bad teachers. That’s my take on it. :)

I believe the people who say forget the past, with regards to historical events, are the ones who never had an interest in history to begin with. Historical events defined as events that had a profound affect on our lives are very important milestones that mark progress in our world. Those who don't want to recognize the importance of those events don't want to talk about them because they probably have little knowledge of them and are afraid to admit it. One way to change the subject is to say..forget the past..I enables them to hide the fact that they probably don't have a clue as to what you are refering to. I personally believe that the historical events should be remembered and learned from. Keep a memory of the past..just don't try to live there or relive the event.

Some people never learn or remember the past. People are different. We live in a world full of love and hate. Intelligence and ignorance. We lose more and more about our history. Some will grow while others will hold resentment toward others. Little bits of history are even left out.

Spirit Dancer do you know how to celebrate Native American History? If so can you tell me how!

history is great teacher. the study of the past sparks the national spirit and keeps people together as they all feel bound by a common link. history also enlightens us about the great deeds, sacrifices and hardships endured by our ancestors and we remember and thank them for our today.
however history also tells us about the atrocities, misrule, barbaric social customs and much more which are a blot on the societies of that era. this is what we should forget and move on. imagine if the world still held the Germans responsible for what Hitler did than would Germany be what it is today. life must carry on and we must remember the good that our forefathers did(whichever part of the world that may be) and forget the blunders committed so that their decedents do not pay for their actions.

When somebody say to forget the past it means you're not supposed to hang on to it with both hands or not live your life in the present. If my ancestors came to the US as slaves or prisoners or indentured servants I can't hold it against a group or race of people for ever because of what happened many generations ago. If my best friend really betrayed my trust to the point where she was no longer my friend I can't hold on to the past and let that keep me from ever having another (best) friend now can I. That would be cutting off my nose to spite my face.................. Anyway, that's what it means.

When somebody tells you to forget the past, he doesnt mean our historical events. It means that you have to move on with your life, dont be bothered with the past experiences that made you suffer. Of course it is impossible to forget your past, it continues to haunts you. But for a concerned people like your friends, and nearest kins, they will tell you to forget the past, to confort you. You are right in saying that"we shouild learn from our mistakes and embrace the lessons that we learn. If we have not learned anything from our past we are "stupid".

Those who forget the errors of the past are doomed to repeat them. It is not a good idea to dwell on perceived wrongs committed against our ancestors in the past. Rather, we should learn the lessons history teaches us so we can be a better society.

I think we shouldn't try to live in the past, that is, not live in the now. If your mind is always wondering about what could have been you'll forget what it can be.

I think the past holds great wisdom and you should learn from it. You should use it as a guide to your future.
