Earlier today at 5am, Constable Robert Plunkett of York Regional Police (just north of Toronto) died while trying to arrest two suspects in an on-going investigation of airbag theft. My question is, why airbags? What purpose does it serve?

RIP: Robert Plunkett 1964-2007

Griffin: They did have enough cops and no shots were fired nor conventional weapons used. The death was more of a freak accident.

People steal airbags cause its quick and easy. Replacement airbags can easily cost a thousand US dollars. It takes a busted window,
2 screws and a plug to take a drivers side airbag. They can probably go to half the body shops in town and unload them quick.

They are very expensive to replace. Chop shops will either use them theirselves or sell them to another repair service.

It is all about the benjamins. If there is a buck to be stolen, then some punk will steal it..

Condolences to the family of Officer Plunkett.

The entire steering column needs replacement after a deployment--very expensive at the dealer--so stolen they are cheaper--very hard to replace and very hard to mount properly if done by a shady mechanic. Who will you complain to--you bought a stolen bag set up. No such thing as a cheap fix

because they are very expensive.
And the street is the best place to find a cheaqp one.

Just like stealing just the face plate off a radio -
Ask for a replacement for yours - then look on ebay at all the stolen ones.

You'll see it clearly - look at the lots on ebay.

There is actually a large illegal market for stolen airbags resold as replacement parts.
