Is your home near wooded areas?
Check windows, holes..like where cables/pipes/etc enter the house. These are called accesses and need to be sealed.
There is no real preventitive for spiders, you have to get them directly with any bug sprays. They don't drag thier bodies like insects so residual products dont get on them. The best preventitives are:
A clean outside of your home...eves, walls ,and around lights are clean of bug build up. Bug bulbs in outside lights.
Bushes and trees are cut away from the house...not touching it.
All access points are sealed up.
No Over-Storage...too many boxes of stuff in closets, garages, around the house. Most get into homes through the garage or windows that do not shut properly.

Hell. When I saw a hairy motherfu**** crawling near my couch, I was on the look-out for the next two hours. It took me 10 seconds to finally crush him to death when I found him, and that is with a 5kg weight. Now, to the point. The only real advice I would give you is to visit a Psychologist. Contrary to popular belief, they do not deal with only insane people, and there is really nothing bad in visiting one. I am actually intending to become one in the future. The point is: no DVD, CD or thateverD can help you like an educated psychologist. If you decide to visit one, which I see as your only long-lasting option, then you should also mention your other problems as well. Now, your mother will really not help your fear, even if she kills the spider. Just consult a professional. Trust me, it could pay off. P.S. Spiders... Ah, no :p . This would not help your fear at all :) Anyway, I hope you kill your phobia. Its not the spider that is at fault, but an interpretation within your brain (I cant give any more information personally, or insure the validity, since I only read one book on psychology so far) Just visit somebody who would know what is happening in your brain, and would be able to fix it. But if you really dont want to visit a psychologist, then you might consider hypnosis. There are many useful free hypnosis audios on the net which possibly could help you. Or perhaps you should learn self-hypnosis, which is not that difficult. Edit: after reading other comments, I have this to add/repeat: The spider is not the problem here. It is your own state of mind/view of things. Even if you arrange a toxic fallout in your home, I doubt that the fear will go away.

No, those things don't work!!
Vacuum daily but really vacuum, like your furniture, mattress, bed frame, window frames, heater vents once a week, any crevice they may be hiding. You may have spider eggs that are hatching and allowing newbies to join you. You have to remove the eggs and break the hatch cycle.
Also brush you hair and coat off before entering the house...some insects hitch a ride.

Try putting dryer sheets around your room. For some reason spiders seem to hate them. I use them and they seem to keep spiders as well as some insects away.

i use spider killer aerosol spray. it kills the spider pretty fast. i understand that spiders take care of insect populations, but i would rather have insects than spiders, so i feel your pain. with the spray, you have to make sure you hit the spider dead on first, or it will run and hide.

Leave them. If spiders come to your room means they have food there. Which again means you have small insects in your room. They will help you in catching and eating all small insects which otherwise will give trouble to you. God/nature has given every creature some life and meaning. We are stupid in not understanding that and think only about our self.
