We took Lariam for 6-8 weeks on three different trips and didn't have anything worse than vivid dreams..... You just need to be aware of the possible hallucinogenic side affects. Most people we know who have used it were fine, but you and your travel companions should know that if you're one of the few who has a bad time with it, you should stop taking it. Here's our page on malaria: http://www.mousetourstravels.com/malaria.html

You'll probably have no problems. Have a great time in Africa! Happy travels... even if you don't travel the world... just remember that life is a journey... embrace and enjoy it! http://www.mousetourstravels.com

The Lariam was really hateful for me. I was hanging out in Bali and had just started the meds. A bunch of us were at the pool and over a period of about an hour I started having the most insecure feelings and literally started thinking about suicide etc. The girl that was with me noticed that I was distressed and asked me what was going on. I freaked. but... she was familiar with the malaria drugs and new about Lariam. If you read the warnings on the label it talks about complete psychosis and many deaths attributed to this drug. Of course it is proscribed by the millions so this is a small percentage of the population. but it was horrible for me. Ask your doctor for a different med. I tell you it has put me off all Malaria meds. Scared the he** out of me.

I used lariam once for a trip to central America. I took it once a week for about ten weeks. There were no side effects for me. Nothing. There is no telling if it it works or not, but I did not get malaria. Since then on more recent trips, I have taken doxicycline (spelling?). I took that daily and had no bad effects.

I took mefloquine for 6 months and had no problems with it. Just being aware of potential problems will make you better equiped to handle what may arise. Also, make sure you use a bed net when you're sleeping - that's usually the most likely time to get bit.
