If it's another guy, I'm a little leery. Girls don't smile at me because I scare them!

It depends..Personally i use my instinct to choose to smile or not.Usually u can tell if a person smiles to u because they likes what they see as a first impression of u, or if the smile is bad-disposed, ironic or provocative in an annoying way in which case i don't smile back. Also as i said, i think when a person smiles at u it's because they like,enjoy the impression they get from u. or even cause they sense your aura at the time which can be pleasant,optimistic,fun and generally shows your mood and feelings. anyway smiling is such a pleasant thing that the cases that u shouldn't smile are
very few..so smile away!

If it's a guy I think is hot then I always smile & I think it means that they think I look sweet. If it's another woman, I usually smile back at them because we women need to stick together! I think they smile at me to be nice. If it's a guy that I don't think is hot, then I usually do smile back at them, but sometimes I don't, especially when I'm in a bad mood.

I see it as acknowledgement, and I do smile back. I smile at random strangers, sometimes, too... but I'm not offended if they don't smile back. They might be having a sucky day.

im the one that usually smiles at strangers first then they smile back. i always smile at people i got awarded the most smiley award all four years in high school :)

Yea, because its kind of rude if you don't, you look like a real snob if you don't.
I think it jus means they are being nice...and it depends on what kind of smile they give you also.
