The state is California and i am already on my husbands insurance. How long can you drive on your UK license for?

Generally not.

But I recommend you check with the specific state that you are moving to. I drove on my UK licence in Arizona before getting the US licence.

BUT (a VERY big but) when you get insurance for a car, it will be INSANELY expensive, without a US licence.

Good news - compared to the UK driving test, the driving tests in mosts states are pathetically easy.

An international driving permit is NOT an actual license in ANY country. It is a translation of your existing national license into multiple languages. Because both the US and UK use English, no translation is required. Once you become a resident of the US, you will need to get a drivers license issued by the state in which you will be living.
