I've read that it can stop the body from absorbing iron due to the tannins in the herb. Anyone know more on this? Does it stop any others, and to what extent? I am a vegetarian, and especially concerned about getting proper nutrients. Thanks!

hi. Yes. It does inhibit absorption of minerals. Also, there are already researchers who are doubtful about it's supposed to be "good effect" on psychosis.

St. John's Wort can decrease the absorption of minerals. There are also cases where it increases their absorption. SO there's a chance to get an electrolyte imbalance like hypocalcemia or hyperkalemia. Either way, it could affect the beating of your heart.

=) Herbs are not as good as people show them to be. We have to be cautious in using them

Hi Misskitty. I just did a search of the biomedical research literature on Pubmed/Medline. I could not find even one scientific paper that suggested St. John's Wort inhibits absorption of vitamins or minerals.

In contrast with the thoughts of the first answerer, there is a substantial body of scientific research that has documented the effectiveness of this herb in the treatment of depression.

Note: St. John's Wort has powerful effects on various detoxification enzymes/processes in the body. These can lead to drug interactions with birth control pills and several chemotherapy drugs, for example. If you are taking any other medications, it may be wise to consult with a knowledgeable health care professional for proper guidance with your herbal supplements.

Best wishes.
