My living room is mostly pathways. From the front door to the hallway is especially bad. Has anyone used bleach in a steam machine and had any success? Can you suggest other alternatives that have worked for you? My carpet is burber. It's tan with specks of color throughout. Any advice or suggestions are appreciated.

ABOVE ALL ELSE DO NOT "SCRUB" or RUB your carpet.

With the cost of carpet today, use a professional. I highly recommend Serv Pro.
I have no interest in the company. I used them while in the floorcovering business, 35 years owner. Ret.
Do not call those who advertise 3 rooms for "a price". Gimmicks, and will over charge you. You may even have an installer who knows nothing about cleaning, renting a machine.
You may not know of what fiber/fibers your carpet is made.
If it is 100% Polypropelene, a small amout of bleach may not destroy the fiber, but it can be harmful to the backing. That contains latex and will desintegrate from bleach.
If it contains a % of nylon or even 100 % nylon, bleach will destroy the color.
Nylon is usually dyed after it is extruded into a solid, compared to a radish. Color is on the outside. Polypropelene is dyed while in a liquid state, like jello, compared to a carrot. Color is all the way through.

If you rub or brush Berber, you will fray the loops and forever have the frizzees.

bleach not only makes big hugh white spots in the carpet it will destroy the fibers

instead do what the professionals do

mix 1 part ammonia with 10 parts alcohol

put it in a spray bottle

get a bucket of very cold water add a few ice cubes to keep it cold

get the carpets very wet with the cold water

scrub with a bristle brush

spray your solutions on and brush it hard and quick

now put a cold water soaked white towel over the spots and hit it with a hot iron then wet vac it dry

Have you tried Shout or another product that you spray on laundry before you put it in the wash? I would dampen the carpet, spray on Shout, rub it in, let it set for half an hour, and then use the carpet cleaner on it three times.
