Hi,
I play World of Warcraft and I noticed that even though on my computer (AMD Sempron 2200+ 1.667 ghz, 1 gb Ram, 256 MB 9600 Radeon AGP Video card) it handles the game really good. I have all graphics and sounds tuned up to the maximum except occassionally it seems to lag quite a bit in places where there's a lot of action. Recently I've been doing research to see what would be the best upgrade for the buck. I'd like to keep the price on this new CPU in the $50.00 area. Which CPU can I upgrade to if my motherboard is a older type, A7V600-X with Socket A? I was considering a 64Bit processor but I'm not sure if it would be compatible with my motherboard. Any help is appreciated, thank you!

It could be the game latency/lag that everyone talks about, but if you are looking at upgrading your system, you are better off getting a new board, etc.
The fastest CPU that is available for your board as stated on Asus' Cpu support list for that board, would be either a Athlon XP 3200+, or a Sempron 3000+. Both of which the cost of, warrant ditching your board and getting a newer one, as the 3200+'s are just not worth the price they go for these days. Also, it doesn't look like your board supports 64-Bit Cpu's via Socket-A.
Cpu support list for your board:

Your best bet, is to look around on www.newegg.com for another board that will accept the current ram you have (DDR), and get a matching processor. Sometimes they have good combo prices on there, so just look around, as you can probably get something for 100 or less. Also, even if the processor speed is around the same as what you already have (1.667), it will still run faster and more stable than the one you have now.
Best of luck.

Ok, the setup you have running right now isn't very good for gaming. What you need to do it upgrade your graphics card to something with either 256mb DDR3 or 512mb DDR2. Now, the difference between DDR, DDR2, and DDR3 is that the higher the number, the faster the built in ram. Also, Try upgrading to 2GB of ram or just get a faster ram chip such as Corsair, which is built for gaming. I built computers alot and I see this exact problem all the time. WOW eats up alot of graphics memory. For what you need, you are gonna be looking at at least $200. Anything less and you will be dissapointed.

You have socket A, which means you CAN get Athlon 64, but only the first gen, not the 2X or the FX or those stuff.

Click on your model name to get the latest manual and specs.
Remember, one option is to replace the entire mainboard and CPU and memory.

Buy another gigabyte of RAM instead. The way you describe it this will help more than replacing the cpu.

Your existing board is only a 32 bit board. No use for a 64 bit processor.
