You should always try to write about what you are familiar with, but you need to ask yourself what "moves" you. Is there something in life that you are passionate about? Is there something that you hate? Is there something that you love? Just start writing - you'll eventually come up with something.

Try writing about life experiences.

If you don't have any significant ones try talking to friends who've been through a lot. Take the emotion from their experiences and translate it into a song. You could even write songs from your interpretation of things. Examples: Love, friendship, war...

I hope that helps, and if you need help deciding if you like what you've written, I'll read them =]

Open your eyes. Inspiration is all around you; family, friends, where you live, life experiences, etc. The true gift of a great storyteller be it songs or otherwise is the ability to tell a story and have people relate to it.
