Okay hold up a sec. Marat Safin.... Fed is up 7-2 in head to head. The first loss came in 2002 in Moscow on indoor carpet. 5-7, 4-6. He broke Roger once per set. The second win came at the Australian in 2005 and it was 7-9 in the fifth. One break again.
The 7 wins for Roger with the exception of the first were all straight set victories. Roger is much better now than he was in 02 and even 05 Marat would go down 3 and 3 if he were LUCKY. on grass 2-0 Roger, on clay 2-0 Roger, on hard 3-1 Roger, on Russian indoor carpet 1-0 Safin.
Roddick is too inconsistent and stupid to take Roger let alone Nadal. Sampras or Agassi are probably the only guys that could give them both a run for the money and they're both retired. Young guys could include Novak Djokovic, RIchard Gasquet and Sam Querrey..

You said it right, if Safin can get his game together he can challenge Federer and Nadal. Even at Wimbledon in the third set when Safin was playing at a high level against Federer the set went into a tiebreak. Even though Federer won, it still shows that Safin can challenge Fed when Safin is playing at a high level. I think that Andy Murray can challenge Nadal, not on clay of course, if his wrist ever gets better. Murray plays that counter puncher game and I think that kind of annoys Nadal a little bit because Nadal is kind of a counter puncher himself. Djokovic has shown that he can handle Nadal, but then again half the time when playing Nadal Djokovic has some sort of problem so they never actually complete a match half of the time. I think that in a year or two maybe Sam Querrey could challenge Federer, not beat him. Querrey has a big serve and gets a lot of free points off it, kind of like Roddick. Once Sam's game develops then I believe that he could challenge Federer. A player that is making his own this week is John Isner and I see a lot of potential in him when his game gets developed a little bit more. He has a HUGE serve and has good ground strokes and comes to net a lot. When people come to net against Nadal, or pull Nadal into net, he isn't comfortable and I think that is a strategy that could be played against Nadal.

I think the serious contenders to Federer and Nadal are
Djokovic, Davedenko, Baghdatis, Ferrer, Murray. These guys
need to be in their top class to beat either Federer or Nadal.
Marat Safin - is a great player and fun to watch....but he looses
his cool and I do not take him more than 1 or 2 rounds.

Its good to see Nalby back and playing semi's in Legg Mason, but lets be serious the match against Simon Giles was error prone and both players struggled, it looked like the player who played the worse will lose than player who played the best will win. So he will no ways start as a serious contender at USO, but knowing Nalby who came back from no where to win back to back masters beating Federer and Nadal on the way anything is possible. Lets wait for the Washington D.C to get over and see his results in upcoming masters before putting him as an outside contender let alone a serious contender.

Your forgetting about the surface that you are talking about. If it's clay, it's pretty much no one. On grass, Federer is probably unbeatavle, although someone like Roddick might be able to beat both of them if his serve is really clicking as well as his ground strokes. On hard, Safin might be able to if he doesn't have an outburst. Also, Gasquet could do some damage as well Roddick. And don't forgot Djokovic.

there are a few of them who can pose as a THREAT to the top two but never a serious challenge i think. take gasquet, he has beaten federer once but ever since he has lost to him since that one time. take djokovic, he beat nadal at the miami tourney this year but nadal has beaten him on all clay tournament and on grass at wimbledon too and novak is suppose to have a better game on grass than nadal...oh well. i think some players will pick on their games once in a while but never a serious challenge.

Hewitt ??? Did you see the beating The fed put on him in the US open final a few years back? Two sets when Hewitt didn't even get a game.
Right now there is no one. If Rodick decides to really develop his mind and a complete game, he could. Gasquet looks promising, but you never know. Blake has a lot of potential, but he gets too hot and cold. Safin just doesn't care enough to really bring it all on a consistent basis.

Djokovic is good, & maybe he could beat them but not now, maybe after 2 years
& I think that Hewit & Safin are too old to beat them

nobody. only an injury could change the inevitable coming up soon. i really don't think nadal is ready for this one. he has been playing with his beach bunny a lot and not working. he was badly injured it is well known. i would not bet on nadal. but he will show up.
