the answer to this question goes back a long way, and the most recent theory seems to explain many things we previously did not understand, although it raises many questions also.
The freemasons, formerly the knights templar have preserved ancient knowledge about this world, which until recently they seem to have forgotten WHY they preserved it!
But the story goes something like this.
Many religions talk about a worldwide flood, and there is evidence that such a flood did happen.
The gods, or at least people of a higher intellect in pre-history
knew this flood was going to happen and recorded secrets on two pillars, one to withstand water and one to withstand fire. These pillars detailed how to measure time in order to know when to plant crops for survival, and how to build 'clocks' in the form of stone henge, so the sky could be observed to forewarn of other disasters. (It seems the flood was caused by seven cometary impacts.)
A method was devised, using two sticks and the suns shadow to measure time. A pendulum can be used to measure one second, the length of swing gives a measurement now known as the megalithic yard, and a division of ths yard can be cubed to give us the megalithic pint. It seems that all units of measurement today and in history relate back to this method, and the french metric system was certainly based on this megalithic second.
Further details christopher knight and robert lomas, uriels machine, and christopher knight alan butler, civilisation one.
It's interesting to note that stonehenge in england uses the same unit of measurement as the pyramids in egypt! All because of the uniformity of the second.

If we live in society we need an organised system of time-keeping (as opposed to external time which flows inexorably and is indifferent to human civilisation or life in general). Without it organised labour could not exist, meeting your friends would become haphazard, and worst of all, what if we were late for a war? Ecclesiastes sums it up very well. Also History could not exist, as Herodotus defined it in terms of the passing of time. Without it WS's MacBeth would have lacked such an eloquent soliloquy.

Because time makes sure that we know where about in history things happened, so we know how long it takes things to happen. It was also made universal so that everyone can keep in touch and all operate under the same systems. It helps society on the whole function on a - no pun intended - day to day basis.

Without time you would have nothing to describe when something happened. Man has made the measurement of time based off of the vibrations of an atom, ie atomic clock. Time is a frame of reference and without it you would not know when something happened.
