Pick one with a good reputation. I buy a lot through Amazon where Amazon acts as a go-between. Payment is made through them, not the individual.
Whatever you do, before you give any personal information or credit card number, look two places:
1. At the top, make sure you see https -- not just http.
The "s" is for secure.
2. On the bottom right, you may see a padlock or an icon where you can check the security of the transaction.

Generally, a safe website is at your discretion. Popular websites (like Amazon, Overstock, and Buy.com) are well-known and often safe. However, there are many, many good sites that are not well know. To decided weather or not the site can be trusted, try using Google to search for reviews on the site. It is also a good idea to view the site's return and privacy policies.
No matter where you order from, any time you submit your credit card information online you run the risk of having your numbers stolen. Despite this, there are many ways to avoid credit card fraud. The popular site Pay-Pal allows you to buy items online without directly submitting your credit card information. Moreover, you can create virtual credit cards that only last for a certain amount of time or purchases (only good in the US, I believe). In addition, many mainstream credit card companies have applications available for generating on-time use credit card numbers. For more information on these items, you should check out the Lifehacker article on the subject via http://lifehacker.com/software/top/increase-online-shopping-security-with-virtual-credit-cards-281879.php

Hello patrick-please don't make the same mistake I did. I ordered a book from an online bookstore and I never got it-even after I tried e-mailing the company and writing to them. I ordered the book with a credit card and I requested a refund-I still haven't heard anything from the company A lot of companies out there are scams-they sucker people into buying something from them, or signing up with them to work their business, or they want you to invest in their company-they take your money and you never hear from them again. You should do your homework before hand before getting involved with them. You should check them out with the Better Business Bureau- http://www.bbb.org/, to find an office near the company you want to complain or find out about, and you should also go to http://www.ripoffreport.com/ to file complains and research info about the company.
You should also do a web search on the company itself to see what others have to say on it-there are sites out there that will tell you if a company's dubious or not.
This information shoud help you.

When you go to the purchasing section of the website, the http address should change to https (s for secure). Also, there should be a yellow padlock symbol in the bottom right hand corner of the screen. This signifies a secure site (SSL 128bit). If these symbols do not appear, I would advise against purchasing anything from it using a credit card.

I usually got to websites that are well known, popular, websites that have well known shops on the high streets etc. I use Mcafee SiteAdvisor which warns me about bad sites but I still prefer to go for the more well known websites. Well known websites like Ebay, Amazon, Argos, Boots etc.

I typically would check the site rating and reviews on one of the "Business rating" sites before buying anything online.
