Lots of companies sell them, check newegg.com for current prices, or many other retailers such as amazon.
It's like asking the best place to buy eggs. It depends on who has them on sale, and how much the farmer's charge the markets depending on volume, etc.
Beware that just because a drive is labelled "portable" doesn't necessarily mean it is more safe from damage than one labelled "external hard drive".
Check the price and specs of various models, and read reviews posted by owners of the devices.
www.tomshardware.com is my favorite site for evaluating computer parts, but don't stop there.

I wouldn't got for a portable hard drive...buy an external one and get a hard drive holder for it. They plug right into the USB and cost about $15. The internal hard drives + a holder costs a lot less than a true external hard drive.

Be careful, sometimes cheap isn't a good idea. Go for quality and buy only the size that you need. I have a 20 gig
that I always use and it works perfectly even after many years and I bought a 120g and I'm happy with it but it's a bit big. I prefer my little 20g that fits in my pocket..

i could in my view stay far flung from the WD Mybook sequence, its no longer possibly a conveyable problematical tension, its extra of a "stay positioned exterior my computing device someplace in basic terms incase theres a powersurge" tension, Why i'm asserting it somewhat is that it defeats the point of an exterior using actuality which you will possibly desire to hold the ability button over 30 seconds to close it down, and its backup functionalities are unusual, in case you elect for a huge one (ie 250GB 320GB) you will might desire to get a three.5" one, those have great connections and reliability connecting by using the two usb, e-sata, or firewire reckoning on the type, i choose for to advise the Seagate loose Agent professional in case you elect for portability, ie (one hundred sixty or decrease usually) i choose for to advise any 2.5" computing device tension (WD, Seagate, even if) in a straightforward 15 greenback enclosure, this form, you do no longer choose for an exterior ability source, in basic terms a usb on your computing device.

Try the SimpleTech External USB Hard Drive 500GB. This is the one that I plan on getting.
I know you can find it at Office Max on sale right now but I don't know if there are any near you.

well, i think you better upgrade your laptop hardisk than buy an portable hardisk because portable hardisk speed is soo low compare to internal hardisk ( because external usually use usb port which slower than PATA/SATA interface). if you want portable hardisk for data storage, then you can use laptop hardisk with casing, it cost about US$50 for 80 gb seagate hardisk, while casing cost about US$10
