Communism was a failure, especially under Stalin. The abuses under Mao and the Gang of Four were bad enough to convince the Chinese to try something new, and then found a successful formula after much pain and suffering.

In the 1930's, Trotsky predicted that Stalinism would have to be overthrown by the working class or it would revert to capitalism. China was also run as a Stalinist regime. Trotsky spells this out in his essay "The Revolution Betrayed."

What we have seen isn't the failure of socialism, rather we have seen the failure of liberalism. All of the liberal safeguards against capitalism are in a state of decay. As long as every entity that promotes a better society must yield to the profit interests of the capitalists, they must constantly retreat. The question then, is whether or not the capitalists can contain the growing unrest of the underclass who will eventually come to the realization that liberalism is a failure and begins to seek a more aggressive solution.

The environmentalists find themselves unable to make any headway in our capitalist society. In spite of the massive evidence that we are entering a dangerous period of global warming, confirmed by the science community as to be caused by human activity , we continue to march headlong towards catastrophe. The environment cannot be adequately addressed as long as economic growth takes precedence.

Labor unions have become irrelevant. In spite of the fact that the working class is being increasingly raped by the capitalist class, the unions are losing members on a continual basis. The reason for this is that they cannot protect American workers when business is free to scour the globe for cheaper labor. They also cannot form an international labor union since that would demand an end to the massive amounts of slave labor around the world upon which the foundation of capitalism rests. Labor unions are capitalist enterprises which seek a more fair treatment for its members. Socialism is anathema to labor unions. The failure of unions to be able to respond to global capital means that unions are increasingly obsolete as structure which can effectively fight for the rights of the working class.

On the contrary, what we are seeing is that capitalism is now being acknowledged as a complete failure for the worlds underclass. This is why the worlds capitalists are increasingly working to create police states in their respective nations. They are keenly aware that fascism is the only solution to a global labor revolt, and they realize that such a revolt would serve to usher in world socialism.
