We are going to WDW in Florida. Since we are traveling with another family, we are going to babysit for each others kids. So, while they go out one night, we watch their children and vice versa.
What are some good things to do without the kids? We might go to Downtown Disney. Any spots that shouldn't be missed? What about the theme parks, should we forget downtown Disney for a chance to visit one of the parks at night?
Thanks!

Wow. There would be a HUGE list if I had to name them ALL, but here's a few. Your also right about skipping Downtown Disney, unless you like to window shop and see the largest disney store in the world.
1. Soarin
2.Test Track
3.Rock and Roller Coaster
4.Tower of Terror
5.Beauy and the Beast show
6.Swiss Family Tree House
7.Ferry Boat
8.Carousel
9.Monsters Inc. Laugh House
10.Honey I shrunk The Audience
11.Mickey's Philhar Magic
12.It's a Small World
and the list goes on...and on.

Go to the Boardwalk Resort and check out the shops, entertainment and food on the Boardwalk. Take a night and visit the different countries at Epcot. They are often overlooked because kids find them boring.
Check out www.allearsnet.com. It's a great website for everything Disney!

I would say go to Universal. The universal parks are open until 10. They have the citywalk for late nights. Downtown Disney has some things you could do like the house of blues or Cirque DE Soliel, but I think the citywalk is better. They have tons of restaurants, a cinema, and much more. I know Magic Kingdom is open until 11, so the other parks maybe too. I would go to Disney Quest. If you have not been there, it is all computerized attractions. They have this one attraction where you could design a roller coaster. Plus it is indoors. So if it is really sunny or completely miserable, it is the perfect place to go. Downtown Disney also has Planet Hollywood.
Heres a link for both...

Quite dinner with no kids, pleasure island for a nightclub, quite walk around the resort, Big kid rides at the parks, rent a boat and take a little cruise, intimate time that leads to a real Disney souvenir nine months later and guarantees future trips to Walt Disney World.

It honestly depends on what you like to do. Personally, I would have more fun going to a park to get dinner and then see either a parade or fireworks. Depending on how late you guys are babysitting for one another...you could always go to Downtown after. I liked DisneyQuest (but depending on the park hopper pass you have depends on if you have to pay extra to get in) I also enjoyed the Comedy Club and the fact that it is New Years Eve EVERY night in DTD!!!
My recomendation is to make priority seating for Mexico in Epcot and stay to see Illuminations. OR go to MGM and get Priority seating for the Prime Time Cafe and then go see Fantasmic. Then take a bus and head on over to DTD!! Hope you have fun!!!!

WDW has fireworks at night and the electric parade. You have to stay at disney. I think they close at 10 pm. But some hotels give you passes to stay after they close til 12 midnight. Its awesome...........Lots of fun. Downtown Disney is cool but you will want to stay at the park.

Being 'minus kids' is a perfect time to have a great dinner. In addition to the previously mentioned 'Califorinia Grill', I'd add 'Citricos' in the Grand Floridian. Great food, plus after you can just sit in the lobby and listen to the orchestra & pianist. Bistro de Paris in Epcot is another great choice.

In June, my husband and I did the same thing. My in-laws came with us and so graciously let us go out one night while they took the kids. We decided to have a very nice dinner at California Grill at the top of the Contemporary Resort. This is an upscale restaurant, where there is a dress code, and ate like we never ate before. This has got to be the best restaurant that my husband and I have eaten at in all of Disney, and we LOVE Disney dining. We had a 6:10pm reservation and was lucky enough to have a window seat and I got to have an awesome view of Magic Kingdom while eating and my husband had the view of the rest of Disney World. After dinner, we decided to walk outside to their balcany and just take in all of the sites (it is located on the 15th floor, so you see everything).
Afterwards, we headed downstairs and had a drink at the bar and just kind of let our stomachs settle from the awesome food and just people watched. After that we decided to do what is called "the monorail crawl" where you get on the monorail and go to the different resorts, getting off at each one and head on over to the bar for a drink or two. After we decided to skip the Grand Floridian to head on back to Contemporary, we decided that since it was very close to when the fireworks were to go off, we would just head on back upstairs and view them there....our server said that since we ate there, all we had to do was show our receipt to the people that check you in and just head back on up. So we got to watch Wishes with a glass of wine outside on the balcany....it was the most romantic night of my life, aside from the night my husband and I got married and engaged.
