Get on to Hoover themselves, straight away. There will be a serial number on the hoover (assuming it's not too badly damaged) and that will enable them to track it to where and when it was sold. You should then be able to get a replacement machine from them.

You have been negligent in not keeping the receipt from ASDA.They are a very good store and will always exchange or refund items that are faulty. You also had the opportunity of registering the purchase with Hoover for guarrantee purposes this would have clearly shown who it was bought from. The fault described is unusual and could be attributed to a blockage of dirt collecting around the motor itself. You must try and be more careful in future when buying a product that is under guarrantee.

Anything you buy from any retailer, whether its a hoover or a Hummer, must be of "reasonable quality" and fit to do the job it was designed for.
Without a receipt, Asda were within their rights to refuse any type of re-imbursement. (You could have found it in a skip)
Write a letter of complaint to Asda head office and the hoovers manufacturer. Its nothing for them to replace it, and they dont need "bad press" about an exploding vacuum.

You dont need a receipt. Tell Asda as they sold it to you it is their responsibility to reimburse you with either a refund or replacement. State the item was not fit for purpose and do iso in writing to the stores manager and forward a copy to the head office. If you dont give in....they will

(1) see if you can find the warranty from the maker of the appliance; you may have a remedy under those provisions, (2) speak directly with the manufacturer, not the dealer, and explain the problem. You may want to write a paper letter and save a copy in case you have to follow up; you will be able to show that you addressed the problem politely and swiftly.
