I have a through the wall unit (new on sale)and don't want to cut a hole in the wall. Can I just install it through the window? Do I really need a sleeve?

well sleeved units sometimes dont have cases around them.. thats what the wall sleeve is for. if it comes with the sleeve then sure.. just need to make sure you mount it ok so it doesnt fall out... look at a through the wall unit as a regular ac without any case just the guts sitting on a steel pan

I've done it in the past.
Cut the hole, box in the opening. I add 2 short studs to the existing studs under the opening, cut so the height is so that when the bottom cross piece is added, it will be even with the bottom of the opening.
Seal around the outside, I frame the inside with molding to look like that window.
