For those of you who substitute taught, how many days out of the week did you get called? How many schools were you signed up with?

I should also ask, how many greades, subjects were you available to teach? I signed up at a elementary and middle school in my town for grades k-8, and am wondering if I will get called enough.

It all depends on how good you are. Most schools/districts have a preferred sub list of the people they will call first when a job is available. If you can get a good enough reputation, you'll get called more and more often. It also helps if you say yes most of the time when you're called. If you turn down more than one or two offers, they'll call other people who they think are more likely to accept the job. You may want to start by signing up with two districts and keep one as your preferred district that you'll say yes to every time you can and only agree to the other as something to fall back on. Once your reputation in your preferred district picks up, remove yourself from the other district so you aren't stretched too thin.

I work for a single district with over 50 schools. There is a sub hotline that calls every weekday from 5pm to 10pm and every morning from 6am to 10am. If you take a job in the evening, it won't call you in the morning. The only time it doesn't call you is when jobs are low. The hotline call subs at random. You can call into the hotline and select days you are not available to work. Teachers who are familiar with your work will also call you, but only if they have your information.

When I subbed, I only signed up with one district and I let the sub-master know that. The person knew that I was dedicated to them and I got called every day. I was even there the first day of school right through proctoring finals.

I substitute taught last spring, and I got called almost everyday. I was in a school district with four schools. It was not my favorite job, but it was good experience for teaching.

In my school system, if you are a good sub and teachers like you, you might get a call everyday. There are some subs in my school who work more days out of the year then most teachers.
