There are several reasons right now.
1 Crude Oil isn't the problem. The refineries can't keep up with the demand for gasoline.
2 There are several blends of gasoline, which mean you have to shut down and switch production.
3 Oil investors are playing on fears of shortages.
4 There is more demand than supply. Even with higher prices people are still willing to drive solo everywhere. More cars, less gas in reserve. People are stilling willing to pay for that luxury.
In comparison though if you were to adjust for inflation, the cost of gas during the 20's and 30's it works out to a little more than $4 dollars a gallon. Enjoy the savings while you can.

Its a combination of three factors:
Supply and Demand both domestically and internationally. The actual MPG of all cars on the road today is the same as the Model A, but there are millions of people with one (or more) cars doing lots of driving. On top of that, every country wants what we have-the freedom to drive themselves instead of public transportation or non-motorized vehicles. Therefore, demand for the "raw material" of crude to both make gas and to make plastic and rubber used to make cars goes up each year.
Taxes-the actual energy cost (as pointed out elsewhere) has not really gone up in most of our lifetimes if at all. If we want more/better roads, we've got to pay for them somehow.
Refinery issues. While some of this could be blamed on "money grubbing..." oil companies, the reality is we want cleaner burning gas, but with different standards from state to state, season to season. We also don't want the refinery build in our backyard (NIMBY-ism) so little new capacity is brought online as more and more cars hit the road.
While a slight increase many months ago could be attributed to the war, worldwide production is up if you subtract out Katrina effect on our Gulf Coast. The other Gulf is doing well from a pure production standpoint. Iran has a refining problem, and human rights/freedoms aren't too great in any of those countries.

First of all, do you realize just how much goes into making engine oil?! First, it must be located (usually in places that involves heavy drilling - expensive equipment). Then it must be extracted through difficult and expensive processes. After this it still must be transported to a refinery where it is set to government-required standards. Finally, it must be transported again across the country to local places where you can purchase it!
Do you even understand that when you compare the price of gasoline per gallon to bottled water there is almost no difference?! People who are beholden to the global warming crowd (and also just left-wing radicals) despise wealthy people and the fact that they provide such a necessary good to people for a reasonable price they are disparaged.

It's all China's fault! I'm just kidding. There are several diferent factors. As Spider said, it's has a lot to do with supply and demand. China, one example, is growning at an unprecedented rate of 8% per year! As China grows they are demanding MUCH more fuel. The US isin't the only big spender anymore. As demand for gas goes up...so does the price.
$4.16/gallon is the approximate market (where supply and demand meet) price for gar right now.
There are a few more reasons, but I'd like to keep this answer factual and keep my opinions to myself.

It is simply economics 101 - supply and demand. The current demand is pushing the limits of current oil supply/distribution channels. So, the price goes up. If everyone in the world cut their consumption by just 10%, the price would collapse.
