Really depends on taste, and what you currently got. If you've got a twin channel amp (clean/dirty) but want more distortion then you probably need to be looking at an overdrive pedal as opposed to a distortion pedal per se. If you want some thundering distortion RAT are good (as used to used by Metallica). If you don't have an amp then some of the modelling unit are good because they give you a variety of sounds (including distortion). I like the V-Amp by Behringer, in fact I've got 2 a bass and a gutar one which I used for recording. Best thing is go to a music store and try out a few, as with most things sonic, it's about what YOU like.

An amp with an overdrive channel is a good start. If you don't have one or can't spring the extra dough, my reccomendations are an Ibanez Tubescreamer, Marshall Jackhammer( I have this one and absolutely love it) or check e-bay for a used multi-effects pedal. I use a Zoom G2.1U for recording and have an expression pedal toplay with in the process. They cost $170 American, but you should be able to find one cheaper. Best of luck.

Yes, it good to have a pedal and a distortion pedal is good for beginners. I have one. You can get one for twenty dollars. Some amps come with the effect on it. Most rock songs have guitars with distortion.

If you want something punkish, digitech are surprisingly good, you need one with good tonal control so you can get a more aggresive sound if required but farely warm and valveish sounding. So my advice would buy either digitech stompbox or a zoom multieffects if you prefer modern, digital gear, if you like older stuff vox make some good pedals for that sort of bort they are a bit pricey, so you'll be looking at second hand stuff in your price range. The zoom stuffs probably best tho, purely for versatility. Line6 are also worth a look in but you may struggle budget wise.

Look for a second hand Digitech multi effects pedal. Not only will yoy then have distortion, you will also have chorus and delay, tuner etc. They're about £80
Or a Boss pedal. They're usually around about £60.
But, I recommened the Digitech. You'll get so more for the extra £20.

Any of these will get you the desired results, provided you have a decent amp, (Marshall JCM, Mesa Rectifier, 5150, etc.), and guitar with a bridge humbucker.

just get an amp with distortion. but if u really want a pedal get a cry baby. (wah wah) pedal. wah wah pedals are basically distortion pedals except you tap your foot repeatedly on it to get the "wah wah" sound.

I am still running the DOD Supra I traded for long ago. It is durable, but needs to be flushed with contact cleaner sometimes.
