This leads the audience to believe that they are two different subjects because it doesn’t make sense for Verbal to incriminate himself

It should be:
This lead the audience to believe that he is two different subjects, because ... the rest of the sentence doesn't make sense rearrange.

it is gramatically correct although I might word it a little differently.
