First thing, remember it is just a novel - it is a social commentary - but only to be considered and not a prediction of the future.

1) Basically the future is a fascist state where everyone is supposed to be equal (ie a communist state) - individual identities are not allowed and everyone must follow the system to mantain the society. Some of the people in the society rebel and that is what it is really about the individual against a system.

2) 3 good things: 1) The ability to seek individual expression. 2) His ability to empathise and love 3) His ability to challenge the authority.
2 bad things (possibly) 1) His wekaness of character at certain points in the story. 2) His lack of agression at certain points in the story 3) His lack of planning or intuition at certain points in the story.

3) The theme is one of social repression - almost a commentary on why communism could nevr work, but also the danger that it might actaully become the way in which we live. It is also a commentry on how important individual freedom and expression is. "I am not a number, I am a free man' for example.

There are some audio clips available online (e.g., http://www.apfn.org/apfn/1984.htm ) but if you're having problems with the book, give it another try. It's never been more relevant than today when it's not actually "Big Brother" we need to fear, but the mass of information "The Holding Company" (the corporation) maintains. Good Luck, and stay with it. Unlike Beowulf, this one should hold your interest.

If you've read it, maybe you could give some specific examples of the parts you don't understand, rather than just posting your homework questions. That way, people would be alot more inclined to help you out.

Okay, here is what I think...

You haven't read the book. It is not confusing, not at all. So please, read it first, from page one to the end, then try to answer your questions (they're not hard, really), and if something is wrong, THEN come back.
