Does anyone know of any bands similar to Radiohead, Portishead, and The Mars Volta? I'm always looking for good music and I haven't found anything worth listening to in a while. The music that is getting played on the radio is just crap now days. Thanks for any help you can offer.

There was a mall group of musicians who WERE very popular traditional jazz musicians. They left their fame and their high paying gigs to pursue the music they were creating just from playing with each other. Creating exploratory and adventurous new ways of playing music was of the most importance for them. The traditional critics of the time (1960's) felt betrayed by them, others welcomed this new and unique sound that was brand new. Are you interested yet?

Here are some of the best from these musical explorers...
Andrew Hill-Point of Departure
Booker Ervin-Freedom Book
Grachan Moncur III-Evolution
Eric Dolphy-Out There
Prince Lasha and Sonny Simmons-Firebirds
Bobby Hutcherson-Components
Tony Williams-Lifetime.
Roland Kirk-The Inflated Tear.
Sam Rivers-Countours

Don't try them at your own risk.

PS-If you want to know right away if you like this sound, get the Bobby Hutcherson album dialogue and listen to the song Ghetto Lights. If you don't like that song, don't waste your time with the rest of theses albums. If you do like it, your in luck because the rest of these albums are similar.

Another PS-I like the bands you have mentioned in your question, and I think that you stand a chance of liking these albums.
