what do you do if you buy a house, come to find out that a bedroom is totally dark even during the day, (dim lamps maybe) and no overhead lighting. if you absolutely cannot put in overhead lighting, what would you do to brighten it up, if say, it had a small window that lets in hardly any light at all.

I don't know why you wouldn't be able to put in overhead lighting, so can't tell if that means you couldn't put in a skylight window, because you can't access the roof?

If no skylight, then increase the size of the existing window & put in a bigger one, or put in a window on another outside wall. If the window faces East you'll get morning sun. It it faces West you'll get evening sun. It it faces North you won't get much sun at all & if it faces South you'll get transitional sun during the afternoon.

If none of this is possible, bring in another lamp - perhaps a floor lamp instead of a table lamp, or if you mostly need the light when you're in bed for reading, get a reading lamp you can clip on the headboard of your bed. Also, check to see if you can put a higher wattage bulb in the lamp you already have in the bedroom.

Lots of options out there to choose from, just depends on what is preventing you from making them work for you.
