I could be a general no-good pillager, but I'll need you to get me some new armor; my old rusted up because I tried to go swimming in it...And if you get tired of me, you can always condemn me to rowing.

I think Sri Vidya Rajgopalan has given the correct answer. But the Answer is very long. Let me explain you in short. Ram built a Bridge instead of ship because he thought, if in the war with Ravana more army of Varana is required then it will be easy to bring reinforcement through a Bridge Than to send ship.

Sorry I can't row ,can't pillage and I get seasick so I couldn't stand the smell of food in the galley and would be in no condition to serve anything,have a good trip.
