why don't you buy one and sew-off the seam...and duplicate the pattern...that's the easiest and fastest...
i sew...i think i can give my theory about this...dome hat, right?...usually, this type of hat is made of about 6 same triangle look pattern. if you can imagine, the triangle has 3 STRAIGHT lines but for hat you'll make 2 CURVE lines and 1 STRAIGHT line...
you also have to measure the round baby's head (or know the industrial baby's hat). Then, divide the measurement into 6 (straight line )....for height, you have to measure too, or know the industrial baby's hat measurement. the height is start from depends what you want...from above the ears?...the point is,you have to make round measurement, too but in 'height' form (vertical measurement)...if you sew, i think you understand what i meant Then you will make this vor the curve lines after dividing by 2 (unless you measure it from bottom hat to peak)...
theoretically (i mean in my head) this measurement result should be the 'middle' (stratight-vertical) line (90 degree of straight line) length...
then...divide 360 degree with the amount of triangle stripes you want to make (4,5,6?)...then make peak angle with the result...make sure total peaks' degree you make will 360 in total...
hmmm...i hope you can get it...because i'm too lazy to draw it...it's a simple math issue actually...
anyway, try to find japanese book may be in the library or friends?...they usually have hat making with a lot of style. i learned it from this book too...
to find free sewing online pattern? wow...i think it's harder to find it than knit...especially those of 'figure' form pattern...if you want to sew (or other craft), you have to sacrifice...making trial or just buy a cheap pattern sample...sorry to say this but nothing's free...i learn sew and until know it has cost me a lot, literally...and still continue...
even for a baby's hat, you have to spend a 'cost' if you want to get a good pattern...
pattern above? that's my theory...you still have to try it...but technically and for basic form, yes...i believe so...it's just a matter of 'baby's skull...just make sure you choose the right fabric and not too tight...so, the baby won't feel heat on it's head or hurt...
if you live in western...choose the fabric that suits the weather or season...
if this pattern doesn't work, please don't complain...hehe...it's free, honey...you just have to make adjustment because it's basic form...
my experience with hat? yes, i made adjustment when i made them, knit, sew...the book i bought is my reference...so i hope you see the same too with my theory...you have no idea working with free pattern...i don't get right fit very often...but what can i expect? it's free...but i got something more: a chance to learn and encouragement to learn how to make my own pattern/correct measurement...those are bigger than anything...
hope this will help
